Road Trip! Toolin’ Down Illinois’ Great River Road

Driving is a great way to travel and still maintain safe social distancing. With that in mind, here is another fantastic drive from a few years ago…
The Mighty Mississippi in all of its glory – the history, the lore, the beauty and the quirkiness.

Join us as we head down the Great River Road with stops in beautiful, historic Galena, Wine Country (yup, there’s wine in Illinois!), Moline, where David traces his roots (he’s John Deere’s g-g-g grandson!),  amazing Nauvoo, and Quincy, where we meet the self-proclaimed “Nutroll Nazi.” And that’s just the… CONTINUE READING >>

Man o’ Manatees

January is manatee mania month in Florida. There is no better time of year to see – and swim with (yes!) – these gentle giants in The Sunshine State, and Floridians go all out to show off the endangered sea cows, including throwing a festival or two. Did someone say festival? No way we would miss that!

Fear Conquering & Climbing My First Mountain on My 52nd Birthday

We were going to hike up a mountain, The Boy said. Not climb, hike.

Or maybe that’s what I chose to hear. Certainly, The Boy is aware of my age and the limitations thereof.

He wouldn’t be trying to kill me on my birthday, would he?

Finding Germany in the Mountains of Georgia

The unexpected surprises that lurk around the next corner are one of the things that can make travel so interesting.

Boy, did we get one of those in the mountains of northern Georgia when we came upon the old fashioned Bavarian village of Helen. Tucked into a valley on the banks of The Chattahoochee River, we suddenly found ourselves driving through an anachronism of epic proportions. Every building, down to the gas station… CONTINUE READING >>

A Town Standing on Stilts

There is something about driving to the very tip of a place, the end of the line, land’s end, that we can’t resist. It’s kind of like climbing a mountain for us, we do it because it’s there. In Louisiana that point where State Highway 1 hits the water is Grand Isle.

Building a road across this expanse of wetland took extensive… CONTINUE READING >>
