5 Car Insurance Myths Americans Actually Believe

We don’t know how these myths started but here are the real facts about auto insurance. …
CONTINUE READING >>

Myth # 1: Drivers of Red Cars Must Shell Out More Money for Auto Insurance

Car insurers establish how much you need to pay for auto insurance based on the age of the car, the normal wear and tear, model, year, body type, safety measures, and engine size. Color does not influence the insurance premium. However, a whopping 44 percent of Americans and 53 percent Millennials firmly believe that a red car costs more than any other car to insure because it tends to be pulled over more frequently by the police.

Insurers won’t even ask you anything about the color of your vehicle when they want to give you a quote. We don’t know how this myth started but it might have something to do with the fact that certain car colors DO attract drivers more prone to traffic violations.

Myth # 2: Insurance Does Not Cover Car Repairs

Thirty-six percent of Americans incorrectly believe that insurance does not pay for repairs if they are to blame for the car crash. Interestingly, 20 percent of Americans believe this myth even when they are not at fault for the accident. We don’t know how this misconception has become so widespread, but it might be caused by a common confusion regarding the various types of sr22 insurance Colorado.

For instance, liability insurance only covers the damaged caused to the other driver’s car when you are at fault for the accident. It doesn’t cover the repairs to your own car. If the other driver is at fault and carries a liability insurance, his insurers will pay for the repairs to your car but not for his.

Liability insurance is now the default type of insurance in nearly every U.S. state, but drivers can get collision insurance, which will cover the repairs to your car as well even when you are at fault for the car crash.

Myth # 3: Car Insurance Covers Stolen Goods

Thirty-four percent of Americans believe that their car insurance will cover for the goods stolen from their vehicles or for a stolen car. This misconception is the most common among older car drivers (aged 65 or older). However, only home insurance covers stolen goods and not all goods. They must be worth more than the homeowners insurance deductible. For instance, if a $1,500 designer bag was stolen from your car and the deductible is $500, the insurer will give you back $1,000.

This myth started probably because some car insurers might cover stolen goods, but in very rare cases. Check with your auto insurance company to stay on the safe side.

Myth # 4: Personal Auto Insurance Includes Business Use of the Vehicle

Many people wrongly believe that their personal car insurance will have their back even when they use their car for business use. Business use of a car is covered only by a separate type of insurance: business vehicle insurance. So, if you or your employees use your personal car for business purposes buy this insurance as well. Also, make sure that your employees do not use the car for personal purposes as well since business insurance won’t cover it.

Myth # 5: 1. No-fault Car Insurance means It’s Not My Fault!

Many Americans are confused about the no-fault system of car insurance. No-fault insurance does not mean that you need not to be at fault for the accident to get coverage.  It will cover medical expenses and lost wages for both parties even when one of them is at fault. Afterward, drivers’ insurers will decide which car insurance company is going to cover these medical costs and lost wages ultimately, based on who’s at fault.

As a result, the driver who caused the wreck and his auto insurer will ultimately have to foot the bill. If you are at fault and need to repair your car, you can ask your insurer to pay for it only if you have collision insurance, which is optional in most states. No-fault refers to medical bills and lost wages, rather than who’s at fault for the accident.

The confusion might come from the fact that no-fault insurance regulations are hard to navigate by non-lawyers. So, if you live in a no-fault state and have been injured in a car crash, make sure that you recover ALL your medical expenses and lost income by hiring a personal injury attorney, as car insurance companies tend to downplay the severity of car crashes and personal harm to get away with as little as they can when they foot the bills.

Fortunately, most personal injury attorneys won’t charge you unless they solve your case. They work on the so-called contingency basis like this lawyer here and the first consultation is usually free. It is best to let a professional handle your case especially when outrageous medical bills are involved.

Car Safety Tips Before Going On A Long Trip

If you intend to go for a long trip, it is wise to prepare in advance. For this reason, it is recommended that you check the following things if you want to have a successful trip… CONTINUE READING >>

Most modern vehicles can be used for long-distance travel since they are faster, more streamlined and most importantly, the engines rarely overheat. However, if you intend to go for a long trip, it is wise to prepare in advance. A vehicle has many mechanical parts which undergo wear, tear and corrosion and you can’t know when you might get stuck. For this reason, it is recommended that you check the following things if you want to have a successful trip.

1) Emergency kit

Your car might fail to start after a long idle time or you might get stuck in the middle of the road due to low battery voltage. Cold weather, running electronics, and even a faulty alternator might cause this problem. To be on the safer side, ensure you carry jumper cables with you. Other tools that might get handy in case of an incident include a Tire pressure gauge, gloves, fire extinguisher, Tire sealer-inflator can, a Flashlight, windshield washer fluid, electrical tape, an emergency stop sign, and a Basic tool kit.

Long trips are unpredictable and you might encounter various problems on the way. Carry drinking water, warm clothing, and even supplies, especially if you are driving through a remote area. A first aid kit is also important since you might get burned, cuts and other injuries when fixing your vehicle.

2) Change engine oil and filters

Oil is important in the lubrication of automotive engines. Insufficient or contaminated engine oil might affect the performance of your engine and it might eventually cause engine failure. When preparing for a long trip, it is recommended that you replace your oil and the oil filter. Select an oil filter that can remove most impurities. According to autoshopaccessories.com, high-quality oil filters use a synthetic filtering material which can eliminate more than 90% of contaminants. A good filter will not only extend the lifespan of your engine, but it will also maximize its performance. In addition, high-quality filters come with anti-drain back valves which prevent oil from flowing back to the engine even after a long idling time.

3) Check your lighting system and other electrical components

The lighting system is very important in all vehicles. There are various types of lights on a vehicle; most of them provide illumination at night while a few signal other motorists on the road. Ensure that both headlights and taillights are working properly. You might consider carrying a spare headlight since it can be helpful if one of the bulbs burns out.

Most urban roads have hundreds of pedestrians and other motorists; therefore you need to check your horn to avoid causing accidents. You might also encounter various wild animals if the road passes through a remote area or a forest. Hooting scares most animals, thus making them clear the way. Also, ensure that your navigation system is also functional to avoid getting lost and it also enables you to locate nearby gas stations and other amenities.

4) Check the jack and spare tire

Ensure that you have a lug nut wrench and a jack since one of your tires might have a problem. You can use these tools to replace a tire on your own, especially if you are in a remote area. Consider checking the pressure of the spare tire before travelling and ensure it is easy to access.

5) Check the air conditioning unit

The Air conditioning unit helps you to regulate the temperature of your car’s interior. A functional system allows you to keep your car cool, especially if it is a hot season. On the other side, the heating system keeps you warm if the outdoor temperatures are very low. The system also minimizes humidity in the car, thus preventing the windshield and windows from fogging up. Therefore, it is recommended that you check if the unit is working efficiently.

6) Preparing Your Vehicle for Long Travels

Aside from packing safety essentials, make sure to prepare your car for long travels. If you’re traveling with children or pets (or both), best outfit your car seat with durable, waterproof covers. Remember to bring a cleaning kit to deal with the potential mess and backup covers for replacement. This way, you can continue your trip comfortably.

A well-maintained vehicle can travel for a long distance without experiencing mechanical failure. It is recommended that you check the functionality of various parts of your vehicle a day before going for a trip to avoid getting stuck on the way. Some of the things that you should check include oil level, spare tires, air conditioning unit, emergency kit, and many more.

There’s no better way to spend your free time during the warm months than engaging in water sports away from all the people. Who doesn’t like that summer breeze and soft beach sand? If you could get away from it all, an ocean or a lake would be a perfect destination. Why not live through the last weeks of this year’s summer season to the fullest?

If you want more action than just sipping drinks and getting a nice tan, you may be tempted to hop on a jet ski and jump across the waves right into the sunset. Luckily, there are many beautiful places in the US where you can do it! Below, you’ll find a list of the best US destinations for this amazing water sport. Get ready for your ultimate summer experience!

Tampa Bay, Florida

Let’s start from the Sunshine State and one of the best areas to enjoy hot summer weather to its fullest. Located on the west-central coast of Florida, Tampa Bay is connected to the Gulf of Mexico, which makes it a perfect starting point for exciting trips.

You can have more quiet time near the mainland; just hop on your fishing jet ski and enjoy the weather. Keep in mind, though, that this area is relatively popular among the tourists, which can make your trip more exciting, but less private.

Lake Erie, Pennsylvania

Despite being the smallest of the Great Lakes by depth and volume, Lake Erie is one of the best water sports destinations in Pennsylvania; by the surface area, it’s also the world’s eleventh largest lake. Because of that, it’s divided into three sectors: the western, eastern, and central basins.

You can easily access the eastern part of the lake from Pennsylvania. You’ll be in for a great adventure in the deepest of the three basins, with an average depth ranging from 80 to 210 feet. Adding to that, Lake Erie is known for its warm waters, not as challenging as those in the other Great Lakes, making it a popular destination for jet ski lovers.

Lake Elsinore, Southern California

Located just two hours east of downtown Los Angeles, Lake Elsinore is the largest jet ski friendly lake in Southern California. If you don’t own a jet ski, you can find many watercraft rentals along the lake’s 14-mile shoreline. Don’t forget to purchase a boating permit from the city hall or a local marina, and you’re free to spend all the time you want (between sunset and sunrise, of course) on the lake’s 3,000-acre surface.

With year-round jet ski weather, Lake Elsinore is a great place to visit. Keep in mind that during the weekend, you may encounter increased traffic.

Lake Michigan

Lake Michigan is one of the most favorite spots for all water sports lovers out there. With four different states sharing its beaches, you can plan an unforgettable adventure on gorgeous waterfronts and with the wind as your companion.

Jump across the waves along the long coast of Lake Michigan and feel free to stay in some of the best resorts in the area. This popular summer destination is well known for its numerous rentals and sports clubs, not to mention magnificent views you’ll see along the way and plenty of activities you can do along the shore. Usually, the waters are calm, which makes Lake Michigan a perfect spot for those who are new to water sports. Nevertheless, keep in mind that the weather conditions can change fast, and some parts of the lake are more difficult to navigate.

Sand Island, Hawaii

Formerly known as Quarantine Island, this small island is located in Hawaii, within the city of Honolulu. It’s a place with a long, fascinating history that’s also often overlooked by tourists. As such, if you want to spend some time away from the crowds, it might be a perfect destination for you.

Easily accessible by a car, Sand Island is well known for its long beach, small waves, and crystal clear waters. It’s a perfect place to visit regardless of the season, and you can be sure to enjoy your time off the beaten track. Even though there are some restricted areas due to the proximity of Honolulu Harbor, there are many picturesque places where you can swim on your jet ski, fish, and rest.

The Bottom Line

You don’t have to go abroad to enjoy a wild ride on your jet ski or spend a quiet time swimming around, fishing, and admiring the view. There are many places in the United States alone that can take your breath away and make you want to come back for more.

Remember about the safety measures and enjoy your time on the jet ski responsibly! Pay attention to weather conditions and avoid swimming in difficult areas. Plan your trip well, and get ready for another unforgettable adventure.

Here is a look back at one of our very first posts. This was our philosophy when we first became empty nesters all those years ago.

On Our Way!On the same day that we officially became “empty” nesters, the very day our youngest started college, we boarded a plane headed for Zürich.

We didn’t really plan for the two events to happen on the same day, it just worked out that way.

What WAS planned was to spend time together and to do the things that obligations had previously pushed aside.

The three years between our older girls leaving the house and The Boy flapping his wings gave us plenty of time to decide
how we wanted to spend, or at least start, this new phase of our lives.

We spent the time before our nest completely emptied planning to have no plans. That may sound strange and contradictory, but we actually have planned to have no plans.

Child rearing is nothing BUT plans. Long range plans like providing a good home, saving for college, raising a solid adult. And the massive short term, everyday planning of ballet lessons, dentist appointments, baseball games… anyone who has kids gets the picture all too well.

So we set out ahead of time to have no set long term plans and let the short term, daily variety, be fluid and adaptable to each new day.

Sounds simple, but in reality it takes some serious planning to have no plans. We knew that we would need some income. After all, we still have The Boy in college and we’ve grown fond of food and shelter, so we took steps in that direction.

After squirreling away nuts in various holes for years, the time had come to dig a few up. We decided to sell our condo and buy some rental property for income, as well as providing a place for our youngest to live while in school.

It turns out that this is a fairly common method of providing housing for students, and it seems to work out well as long as they don’t go all Animal House on the place.

Our first encounter with the no plans plan popped up when the properties that we could get good deals on needed work. No problem, we simply became handymen for a couple of months and got to know a college town…. no plans and some new experiences to share.

We thought we ‘d be seeing the world from the deck of a catamaran by now, but new opportunities in Europe came up. So instead we are seeing Europe and North America from planes, trains and automobiles. That’s OK… no plans and new places to see.

At some point in the future, when we really aren’t expecting it, the boat idea might fall back into our laps. That’s the way life is. Certainly things come up, but now we take them as they come instead of worrying ahead of time, then we simply adjust our lack of plans.

This isn’t something that we started because The Spawn were leaving, we have been laying the groundwork for over twenty-nine years. Back when we had barely evolved into human beings ourselves, Veronica squeezed out a few yard apes (how did that happen?) and we had to become responsible adults.

While raising the kids, we always tried to remember that a huge part of being good parents is being a good couple. That way, when the time came to get back to just the two of us, it was easier to remember what brought us together in the first place.

After three years of embracing a “no plans” lifestyle we’ve learned a couple things. First, it’s working because Veronica and I are on the same page. We spend almost all of our time together, something that may not be right for everyone, but it works for us. In the eloquent words of Kurt Vonnegut, we are a nation of two.

Second, our stress level has plummeted. Travel can certainly take a toll these days, especially with kids or if there is a hard and fast deadline for being somewhere. But the no plans method has eliminated almost all of that. We do some of our traveling in a beat up old motorhome so our schedule is our own.

When we do fly, we try to leave enough leeway in our booking that a missed connection doesn’t destroy our trip. In fact, a missed connection can be a good thing, we’ve earned quite a few vouchers for free future travel by volunteering to take a later flight while everyone around us stresses out.

Part of the beauty of our new no plans plan is that now we get to be the kids for a change. We have found that it is very important for us to keep learning. To try new things together, things that neither of us have any previous experience with.

Explore. Examine. Investigate. Inquire. Enjoy.

That’s the plan.

5 Best Places to Go Wine Tasting in the United States

What’s better than looking at beautiful views and talking with interesting people about wine while sipping a glass of delicious Chianti, Chardonnay, Bordeaux, or Pinot Grigio? Sounds fantastic, doesn’t it?

Once deemed as entertainment for snobs, and other types of rich smartypants, tasting wine has become a popular way of spending vacations over the last few years. And is it even surprising?

What’s better than looking at beautiful views and talking with interesting people about wine while sipping a glass of delicious Chianti, Chardonnay, Bordeaux, or Pinot Grigio? Sounds fantastic, doesn’t it?

And you know what’s even better? You don’t have to fly to France, Italy, or Spain to taste some good wine. Many excellent wineries in the US are waiting for you to discover them. And while you’ve probably heard (or tasted) of California wines, that’s just the beginning.

Here’s a list of the 5 best places to go wine tasting in the USA. Oh, and if you worry that you’re not a specialist, we recommend visiting Acker Wines, where you can find out more about all things related to wine.

Virginia Wine Country

Virginia may not be a popular destination yet; however, vineyards located there are doing everything they can to make it one. The wine from Virginia is older than the country itself, and it’s also delicious.

That’s all thanks to the superior drainage, and airy atmosphere created by the Appalachians. They create the perfect conditions for growing healthy wine grapes, which make the wine so tasty.

And speaking of wine, Virginia is known mostly for its Bordeaux blends and Chardonnay, but with nearly 300 vineyards all around the state, everybody can find something for themselves.

Missouri

The wine industry is still young in Missouri, but it doesn’t mean that Missourians don’t know how to make it. On the contrary, the state is one of the most exciting destinations if you like good wine. Why? Because they like to experiment with different flavors.

Some of Missouri’s most excellent wines come from heritage grapes, like Norton or Catawba, whereas others have their origin in new hybrids, such as Traminette or Seyval Blanc.

At the moment, more than 100 wineries are scattered across the state, and each one of them offers something different. Most of them are located near Kansas City, which many people refer to as “Paris of the Plains,” all thanks to its many boulevards.

Finger Lakes Wine Regions

The Finger Lakes region is mostly known for its picturesque small towns, breathtaking views, and fantastic nature. The peace and quiet make it one of the best destinations for New Yorkers who need to take a break from the fast pace of the Big Apple.

But there’s one more thing that the area is known for – the wine. Moreover, Finger Lakes has one of the most-awarded wineries that offer everything from delicious Pinot Noirs to Rieslings. The region is also known for its high-quality sparkling wines.

If you’re looking for a relaxing trip to one of the most peaceful areas in the country but would like to taste one of the best wines in the count, Lake Fingers is the perfect destination.

Ohio River Wine Trail

Ohio River Trail has a very rich heritage when it comes to wine growing. The area is divided into two, and famous for its variety of strains, and tastefulness of its wines, including Rieslings, Chardonnays, and Cabernet Sauvignons.

That’s because on one part, the climate is continental, and on another, it’s subtropical. It allows wineries to experiment with different strains, creating a wide variety of delicious wines.

Walla Walla in Washington

The state of Washington is the second-largest wine producer in the United States, and Walla Walla is its heart and soul. This small, picturesque area located in the eastern part of the state serves as a home to nearly 100 hundred wineries.

Walla Walla is mostly known for its delicious Bordeaux, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. What’s more, with a plentitude of rivers, lakes, and vast sagebrush deserts, the region itself is absolutely astonishing.

A little piece of advice. Once you get there, watch out. It’s very easy to lose yourself and stay there for a couple of days too many.

Summary

Even though the US is not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about wine, vineyards located in the country are doing everything they can to make that happen. A few wine tasting destinations mentioned in the article are just the tip of the iceberg, as thousands of them are scattered throughout the USA.

And while California is still the biggest producer, other states are slowly starting to catch up. The industry itself is also very likely to grow.

That’s why if you’re planning a little retreat, you don’t have to book a plane to Paris, Rome, or Madrid. All you need to do is open your phone, and find out what are the best wineries near your location. Tasting wine has never been easier.

How Safe is it to Travel to Everest Base Camp Trek in 2021?

One of the most popular trekking routes in the world also includes the name of Everest Base Camp. The spectacular view of Mt. Everest, the highest mountain in the world, mixed with the rich cultural experience, has given EBC a different reputation. It is one of the most exciting treks to partake on because of its unmatched natural beauty, spectacular view of mountain ranges, and priceless cultural charm.

Everest Base Camp Trek in 2021

Preparations are going on to ensure that 2021 does not follow the sorry state that 2020 brought because of the COVID-19 outbreak. Everest Base Camp has been listed as one of the top destinations to visit.

Possible Situation in 2021

EBC trek in 2021 is sure to be filled with difficulties. The unprecedented lockdown and the shutdown of airlines have had a great impact on Nepal’s tourism activities. The tourism year of 2020 had to come to a sudden halt following the pandemic’s danger and has been postponed till 2021.

Since 90% of the economic activities and tourism have come to a full halt, there are bound to be some complications while traveling to Nepal in 2021. The first being hike in prices. The prices for all kinds of tourism activities and the cost of lodging and food are likely to rise in 2021.

Popular destinations like Everest Base Camp Trek, Annapurna Base Camp Trek, and other famous trekking routes will be expensive because of the lack of facilities. The accommodations especially are expected to hike up their prices to cover up their lack of activity in the year 2020.

The beauty of Nepal lies in its deeply rooted culture and natural gifts. Thus, most of the major trekking routes are in rural areas where nature has remained untouched and beautiful. As a result of the prolonged lockdown, the residents have faced difficulties transporting essential items to these rural places where most of the trekking routes of Nepal lie. If this situation does not get tackled by the government in the long run, it surely brings difficulties in the tourism activities of 2021.

Nepal is also in the list of developing countries. It is entirely possible that even when the vaccinations against COVID-19 are prepared and distributed, it may not reach the whole population within the first quarter of 2021. Thus, there might be a delay in the re-starting of tourism activities, especially in rural regions.

However, not everything is as dire as it seems. The rural conditions of most of the traveling routes are both a boon and a curse. As these trekking routes lie in such rural areas, they have minimal contact with the rest of the world. Because of this condition, the effect of COVID-19 has not been as widely spread in Nepal as the other areas.

The mountain regions, where most of the tourist destinations routes lie, are safer than the low land regions. The most pressing issue was the spread of COVID-19 through the open borders of Nepal, but even that has been somewhat strictly controlled by the government of Nepal. There has also been a meager record of infections and even lower record of death because of COVID-19 in Nepal with regards to its neighboring countries. As for this reason, Nepal is still a relatively safer place to travel in 2021 among all the world.

The government of Nepal has been trying it’s best to make sure that the year of 2021 brings only good memories to travelers. The plan for developing all sorts of infrastructure for the sake of a successful year has already been put forward and is sure to move rapidly once the situation of COVID-19 settles/slows down.

Conclusion

It will not be a lie to say that Nepal is one of the safest places to travel in 2021. There have been instances of infection, but they are relatively lower than its neighboring countries, and the recovery has also been faster. Though recovery from the nightmare of COVID-19 will not be simple, the tourism sector of Nepal is bound to face several setbacks. Apart from the rising prices in food and accommodation, the impact of COVID-19 is still lower in Nepal, which is ideal for travelers. Only time will tell the final result, but the chances are higher that Nepal’s tourism sector will bounce back to its initial phase in no time.
