Smart Animals and the Studies About Them

It has become evident that animals have a variety of ways of being intelligent, just like people do…
CONTINUE READING >>

Humans have been fascinated with the intelligence of animals for years, and many studies have been done to learn more about how smart they are. The more scientists learn about animals and the different things they can learn to do, the more surprised we are at how smart many animals are. The smartest animals are as smart as 5- to 7-year-old children!

Parrots can Pick Locks

Parrots are very smart, and they have demonstrated this for years. One reason it’s easy to see that parrots are smart is that they are highly trainable, like dogs. In a study of cockatoos, it was found that they were very skilled at figuring out how to solve puzzles involving locks with different mechanisms including bolts, pins, and screws. The birds figured it out. Then, the scientists rearranged the locks, and the cockatoos did it again. Not only were they smart enough to solve the puzzles, but they were also patient and willing to work for a long time, an important aspect of learning and discovery.

Crows Solve Puzzles

Crows are one of the most intelligent animals on earth. Scientists know crows can learn to use tools and adapt them in different ways. Crows can solve puzzles, and they can think ahead to plan a strategy for solving puzzles with several steps.

Scientists now think that one species of crow may have the puzzle-solving abilities of a 7-year-old human! This crow lives on islands off the coast of Australia. In one interesting experiment, based on one of Aesop’s fables, the crows were challenged with displacing water by adding stones until the water level was high enough for the birds to reach bits of floating meat. The crows showed they knew exactly how water displacement worked by ignoring the tubes with only sand in them and focusing on the ones that contained water.

 Dolphins Name Each Other

Scientists have known that dolphins talk to each other for a long time. Specifics of how they communicate, what they say, and how complex this language is are being researched. We now know that dolphins call each other by specific whistles, and when another individual calls one of them, they respond by repeating their special name. Because dolphins are social and learn to know each other, they need a way to communicate, identify with each other, and stay together.

Dolphins also have very long memories. In one case, two dolphins knew each other when they were younger but then were moved to different zoos. 20 years later, the distinctive whistle of one dolphin’s name still attracted the attention of the other one.

Elephants Work Together

In a study designed to test the cooperation of elephants, scientists discovered they work together 80% of the time in order to get food. The test contained a table with a rope that had to be pulled from both ends in order to gain access to the food. When the elephants pulled at the same time, they both got food. The elephants continued to cooperate with each other even when they weren’t allowed to choose their own partners.

The only time they were less likely to work together was when there wasn’t enough food on the table for both animals. This is interesting as the same thing tends to be true of other cooperative animals and humans.

Chimpanzees Talk with Gestures

Wild chimpanzees use gestures to talk to each other, just like humans. Researchers have studied this behavior and have learned the meaning of these communications. Scientists say it’s important to understand the difference between calls, which many animals use, and communicating messages which only a few can do. Chimpanzees use gestures to talk to each other and can say things like “climb on my back”, “Let’s groom” and other messages. The researchers translated a vocabulary of 66 distinct gestures that the animals use in the wild.

Dogs Recognize Their Native Language

While dogs don’t really have a native language, they do know the difference between the language they usually hear and foreign languages. Scientists gave dogs MRI scans while reading to them in several languages. When they studied the scans, they found that different areas of the brain were used depending on which language was heard. This means that dogs learn more than specific commands, they also learn the sounds and patterns of the language itself. The scientists proved what dog owners already know- that dogs are remarkably social. However, the study shows that they are perhaps more receptive to social cues than anyone knew.

Conclusion

As we learn more about specific animals and the different things they can do, the ways they think, and how they learn, it’s become evident that animals have a variety of ways of being intelligent, just like people do. When given the same puzzle to solve, for example, parrots and crows both figured it out, but they did it in different ways. Parrots and crows are both very intelligent but learn in different ways.

Beginners Guide To Using Gold Leaf

Gold leafing is a timeless artistic practice that is commonly used to give upcycled items a whole new lease of life or add some much-needed shimmer to a piece of artwork.

Through the art of gilding, or applying the material directly to another surface, gold leaf can transform even the smallest of things into an elegant masterpiece!

But that’s not all that gold leaf can do. If you’re a beginner to using gold leaf and want to know more about what it is, what it’s used for, and how to apply it, then this article is for you.

What Is Gold Leaf?

Yes, it is actually gold! The use of “leaf” simply translates to “thin sheets,” meaning that gold leaf is gold that has been hammered into fragile sheets usually around 0.1 micrometers or 4 millionths of an inch thick. It’s typically sold as individual sheets or in rolls.

Much like gold, you can purchase gold leaf in multiple shades and karats. The most popular type of gold leaf is variegated gold leaf sheets which serve an entire range of purposes.

What Materials Can Be Gold Leafed?

You can put gold leaf on just about any type of material for multiple reasons. Some of the more common surfaces are as follows:

      • Ceramic
      • Stone
      • Paper
      • Marble
      • Metal
      • Tile
      • Textiles
      • Wood
      • Glass

Common Uses For Gold Leaf

Due to its almost regal appearance, gold leaf is commonly used as an amplifier – a way to make everyday objects look a little bit more luxurious. This is done through the process of gilding which entails applying gold leaf to just about any surface.

It’s commonly used for the following:

      • To enhance artwork
      • On the skin
      • As decoration (including enhancing a photo frame or a book using gold leaf)

Some people also choose to use gold leaf as nail art or add some edible gold leaf to a cake for decorative purposes.

How To Apply Gold Leaf

There are a couple of simple steps you must follow when using gold leaf. We’ve outlined these below.

1. Prepare the Surface

Cover the areas of the object that you aren’t planning to apply gold leaf to with painter’s tape and then sand down the rest of the surface until it is smooth. Once this is done, remove the dust with a clean cloth and apply a specially formulated primer. This tacky surface is what will adhere gold leaf to the surface.

You should then finish this step by applying a gilding sizer, or the glue that will hold the gold leaf to the relevant surface.

2. Cut Gold Leaf to Size

Depending on the project you’re embarking on, you then need to cut the gold leaf into smaller pieces which will make it a bit easier for you to apply.

Lay it flat on a gilding cushion or other relevant surface with the matte side facing up. Then, apply pressure with your knife before you start cutting and gently start to remove the leaf from its backing. Keep the tissue paper backing for later in the application process.

If it’s easier, you can place the leaf and its backing on the surface of the object that it will be applied. Keep the backing side facing you before removing it.

3. Place the Gold Leaf On the Object

Before you begin this step, remember that the leaf will only stick to tacky surfaces. Lay the backing tissue paper onto the leaf. Once this is done, you can blow on the gold leaf which will ensure it lays flat.

4. Smooth It Out

Then, use a soft brush or your finger to gently burnish the leaf and remove air pockets, keeping the paper still to avoid tears or scratches. You can then start brushing the leaf to ensure it sticks to the object.

Using a back-and-forth motion, gently move the brush to remove the additional gold leaf. Now, your object should look like it is made up of gold instead of covered in random bits of gold leaf.

5. Finalize Your Gold Leaf Item

Check for areas where the gold leaf didn’t stick and smooth new bits over to ensure a perfect finish. For non-perishable items, it might be wise to apply an acrylic top coat for added protection from water, dust, and light.

Summary

That concludes the beginner’s guide to using gold leaf! After reading this article, we hope you now understand what it is, the materials it adheres to, the purpose of gold leaf, and also how to apply it to a surface.

Best Beaches for Swimming in Lanzarote

We love the beach, and the island of Lanzarote is without a doubt a beach lover’s paradise. Of course the year round sunshine and warm temperatures don’t hurt, but there is more to it than that. So let’s take a look at some of the unique places to swim and sunbathe on this gem in the Canary Islands.

The islands are a part of Spain, even though they are just over sixty miles off the northwest coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean.

Lanzarote is the forth largest island in the Canaries and the closest to the mainland. This means that it is easy to get to, and once you arrive it is simple to get to and from your accommodations using Lanzarote transfers.

This is by far the easiest way to get from the airport to your hotel and back again. Also, you can choose from either a shuttle bus or a private transfer in a new, clean, and reliable car, both for reasonable rates.

Once you are settled in, it is time to explore and enjoy some beautiful beaches, some of which are unlike anywhere else in the world. Others may not be too surprising, other than their pristine beauty and nearly perfect setting, and these are best for a typical day at the beach.

Playa del Jablillo is a great example of this. Calm, clear water beckons swimmers, and snorkelers will be thrilled by the amazing amount of colorful fish. Another fantastic choice is Playa Flamingo, which has all of the amenities that anyone could want for an afternoon at the beach with restaurants, shops, and several seaside bars relax and sip a cold beer.

For the more adventurous swimmers and explorers, there are a few more unusual beaches on the island that strike us as almost out of this world.

By that we mean that they look like they might belong on some alien planet. The volcanic history of these islands has made for some almost unbelievable scenery that also happens to be right on the edge of the water.

Perhaps the most striking of these is Playa del Charco de los Clicos, with its black sand and moon like landscape surrounding a bright green pool of water. It may not be all that much for swimming, but wow, what a view!

Another extraordinary spot is Playa de Papagayo. We think this looks like something out of a science fiction movie. Stark volcanic rocks surround gorgeous fine sand and crystal clear water. And, as an added bonus, the locals say that Papagayo has the best weather on the island.

If you are like us, even though we are beach bums at heart, we want to explore everything when we visit a new place, especially an island as interesting as Lanzarote. So we definitely want to check out Timanfaya National Park and the camels.

Wait, what? There are camels? Yes, well, technically they are dromedaries, but a dromedary is also known as a one-humped camel.

They were originally brought to the island to work in agriculture, but as tourism became more and more popular they adapted to a new line of work and now are a major tourist attraction.

They are available for sightseeing rides across the incredible volcanic landscape of Timanfaya National Park. The camels will carry you for a short half hour ride into the park and its lunar-like surroundings, making for an experience that is beyond unique. It is truly only possible on Lanzarote.

And after riding a camel, we think that it must be traditional to find another beach for a quick dip before dinner.

So off we go!

The Most Popular Massages you can get at a Spa

If you want to get a massage at a spa centre such as the Lake District’s luxurious The Falls and you’re unsure which one to go for, continue reading to find out what the most popular types of massages are.

Relaxation

This is definitely the most common type of massage, as its only purpose is to help you unwind and feel good throughout the session. The relaxation massage is certainly the most indulgent type you could get.

The therapist is going to use several massage techniques like the rolling of both muscles and skin, long strokes, and gentle kneading. Even so, it might not sound particularly effective, but it’s really good for relaxing you and encouraging blood flow. You would definitely love the experience, so much so that you might even fall asleep during the massage.

Swedish

A typical Swedish massage includes five techniques. These are stroking, kneading, rubbing, tapping, and vibration. Harsh and scary as that may sound, this type of massage is definitely not meant to punish you in any way. On the contrary, these massages are designed to help you relax, soothe any muscle tension, and improve your circulation. If you decide to go for this one, know you’ll feel incredibly refreshed after your session with the therapist.

Hot stone

Hot stone massages use heated basalt stones that are strategically rolled and laid on certain body parts. This treatment is considered more intense and, as a result, more efficient. Exposure to direct heat will help relax your muscles. Hot stones used on your body will expand your blood vessels, which calms your entire nervous system.

Cool stones, on the other hand, restrict your circulation in order to wake up your nervous system in a gentle manner. The therapist will use both kinds of stones – hot and cold. This combination of warmth followed by coolness is designed to heal the body properly. You will feel rejuvenated after your massage.

Lymphatic drainage

Lymphatic drainages are therapeutic treatments which make use of long rhythmic strokes and gentle motions. The therapist will start with your feet and make their way up your body, following the lymph nodes’ direction. This type of treatment is meant to boost your lymph flow throughout your body, refresh your entire immune system, and energize you. It’s also known to fight infection and speed up the healing process, in order to help you recover faster from any type of illness.

Sports

If you’re an athlete and you’re going on a holiday to the Lake District, you might want to get a massage at a beautiful spa centre during your stay. Depending on the sport you practice, your body uses certain muscle groups. Trained and qualified sports massage therapist have a vast knowledge of both skeletal and muscular systems, in order to adapt to every single athlete. An efficient sports massage treatment is going to increase your circulation, relax your muscles, decrease joint swelling, and reduce fatigue.

Taking A Road Trip? Don’t Forget To Check Your Car Insurance

It surprises many drivers how little coverage they can have from their auto insurance when they drive out of state. When you are choosing a policy, always check… CONTINUE READING >>

A road trip is one of the great American traditions. It is a rite of passage, everyone has to go on one at least once. They can also be high on people’s bucket lists, taking a single long trip from sea to shining sea to visit some of the country’s amazing sights and cities. Before you pack your bags and warm up your engines you need to check your auto insurance policy, and maybe get a new one.

Can Your Car Insurance Cover The Trip?

If you have an existing car insurance policy, you may want to check the fine print before you start your journey. Some coverage can change between states, and some perks that come with the may policy only apply in your home state. You may need to upgrade your coverage with brand-new insurance, fit for the open road, and a long journey.

At The Hartford, you can find high-quality car insurance policies with excellent and expansive coverage. They also offer a variety of car insurance, like AARP car insurance, that can help seniors save money before they take the trip of a lifetime across America. You can also get other types of policies from them, like RV insurance, which is perfect if you are crossing the country in a recreational vehicle. For more information on RV insurance check Utility Saving Expert who offers comprehensive coverage tailored to your specific travel needs.

Can Your Car Insurance Cover Other Drivers?

Long trips often mean passing the wheel between travelers. If you need to cover a lot of ground in a day or two, you have no choice. The only reasonable way to do it is to share the responsibility with other drivers. Your existing insurance policy may cover another driver when they get behind the wheel, but does the coverage extend to different states?

These small details can become very important down the road. It is worth scrutinizing your policy or buying some extra coverage to ensure you, your vehicle, and anyone who drives your car are covered in an accident. The cost of car accidents can run into the millions, and not having enough coverage could be a violation of state laws.

Does Your Policy Offer Enough Cover?

Different states have different minimums for auto insurance coverage. If you begin your journey in Miami, Florida, and end it in New York City, New York, then you would be underinsured when you reach the Big Apple. In the state of Florida, the minimum for asset damage cover is $10,000. In New York State, it goes up to $50,000. Check your minimums and follow your route, checking state laws as you go.

If you are going on a really long trip, heading north into Canada, or taking a trip south of the border to Mexico, you may need a whole new policy depending on your auto insurance fine print. Before you pack your bags for an international road trip, check on your coverage for a foreign nation. Like each of the United States, they both have their own rules of the road and you need to be fully insured when you travel.

It surprises many drivers how little coverage they can have from their auto insurance when they drive out of state. When you are choosing a policy, always check to see what level of coverage you have when you travel out of state or out of the country.

You’re not alone if you are wondering why someone would go for sublingual vitamins or what they even are. Sublingual vitamins are a type of vitamin designed to be taken under the tongue and allowed to dissolve. That enables the vitamin to be absorbed more quickly and directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system altogether.

There is much to know about these vitamins, such as their benefit over regular ones. You may also wonder which vitamins can or cannot be sublingually taken.

To break it down for you, let’s answer a few questions to get the facts about sublingual vitamins.

What Is the Difference Between Sublingual and Regular Vitamins?

Sublingual vitamins are designed to be dissolved and absorbed under the tongue. Unlike regular vitamins, which are swallowed and go through the digestive system, sublingual vitamins don’t pass through the digestive system and go straight into the bloodstream. That makes them more bioavailable and allows them to be more effective.

Why Is Sublingual Vitamins Intake More Effective?

There are a few key reasons why sublingual vitamins are more effective than vitamins taken in other ways.

    • When vitamins are taken sublingually, they don’t get to the digestive system and go straight into the bloodstream. That means that 100% of the vitamins are absorbed and available for use by the body.
    • Sublingual vitamins are usually in a liquid form, which makes them easier for the body to absorb.
    • Sublingual vitamins usually have a higher concentration of nutrients than vitamins in pill form. This means that you need to take fewer vitamins to get the same benefit.
    • Sublingual vitamins are absorbed more quickly by the body. That means they start working faster, and you can feel the effects more quickly.
    • Sublingual vitamins are convenient and easy to take. You just put a few  drops under your tongue and wait a few minutes for them to be absorbed There is no need to take them with food or water, and no need to worry about them upsetting your stomach.

What Are the Best Vitamins for Sublingual Intake?

Some nutrients are better absorbed when taken sublingually (under the tongue). That is because of some reasons, such as their urgent need for quicker functioning in the body.

Some of the best vitamins for sublingual absorption include:

    • Vitamin B12: Vitamin B12 has a vital role in many bodily functions, including energy production, DNA synthesis, and red blood cell formation.
B12 deficiency is relatively common, particularly among older adults, and can lead to fatigue, anemia, and neurological problems. Sublingual B12 supplements are an effective way to increase levels of this vital nutrient.
    • Vitamin D: Vitamin D plays critical roles in your body’s functioning, such as bone health and calcium absorption. It can be hard to absorb sufficient vitamin D from diet alone, and deficiency is common, especially among older adults. Sublingual vitamin D supplements are a convenient and effective way to ensure adequate intake of this vital nutrient.
    • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: The fatty acids are a variety of polyunsaturated fat essential for health. They are associated with various health benefits, including heart and brain function.

Are Sublingual Vitamins Worth It?

Yes, especially if you have difficulty swallowing pills or digestive issues that strain the smooth absorption of food nutrients. That’s because sublingual vitamins go directly into your bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system.

History of Ripple Cryptocurrency

What is XRP Ripple, and what history does it have? Let’s talk about it…
CONTINUE READING >>

XRP is one of the mainstream digital assets throughout all crypto exchanges. As of October 2022, its price is $0.45, the market cap is over $22 billion, and the daily trade volume exceeds $1 billion. What is XRP Ripple, and what history does it have? Let’s talk about it in this article.

Ripple brings many benefits to its users:

    • it allows instant money transfers worldwide;
    • minimum fees;
    • no middlemen, no delays.

The project has all the chances to surpass the popular Swift financial system, offering the solution for its drawbacks. If you have tried to send money abroad, you understand those troubles with high commissions and delays. Ripple eliminates all these issues, offering a functional and instant solution.

Some History

The first name of  the project was Ripplepay. It was released in 2004 – long before we first heard the word “Bitcoin”. The Ripplepay project was initially aiming to ensure instant and secure money transfers.

Later the project was renamed to OpenCoin with a ledger-based mechanism that different financial establishments used. Then in 2013, the project was once again renamed to Ripple Labs with its network open source. Two years later, the project got its name – Ripple.

In 2017, the project made many new partnerships adding large world banks such as BBVA and others.

Ripple Price

Since the company has legislative issues with SEC that demands Ripple Labs to claim the XRP toke security, the XRP Ripple price did not change much, even amid sharp market movements. Judicial proceedings do not let the company develop at full scale, which is why its asset does not show growth. What maintains the XRP Ripple price and what keeps this asset on the top of the ranking? The matter is that large investors have long ago bought Ripple tokens and hold them in the long term. The project is promising and has great chances to boost in the future as soon as judicial proceedings end. So we are all waiting for that moment.

Looking at the Ripple graph, we can see that the peak price of XRP was in 2018 – $3.30. In 2019 the price dropped to 0.35, then lowered to 0.14 and again rose to 0.58. You can check out the Ripple chart on the WhiteBIT platform and see the asset’s price fluctuations.
