Over the past ten years of our nearly nonstop travel we have managed to visit a ton of the destinations on our so-called bucket list.

Most of these were typical classics that almost everyone has on their list, places like The Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu, The Grand Canyon, Rome, and Athens.

Many more that we had never thought of became bucket list items as soon as we saw them, such as Prague, The Galapagos Islands, Glacier Bay, and the Mayan Ruins in the Yucatan. And there are also some that we still have yet to see, such as Antarctica, Egypt, or the Taj Mahal.

It is actually hard to imagine kicking the bucket without seeing these amazing wonders or visiting Antarctica, which would mean that we had made it to all seven of the world’s continents.

But one thing remains the same no matter where our adventures take us; we are always on the lookout for cheap hotels as a way to save some money when we go gallivanting across the globe.

Wait a minute. Sometimes that phrase can cause the wrong reaction.

We don’t mean cheap as in some dumpy flea-bag or scary flop house. Nobody wants to stay in a place with funky towels or a squishy mattress.

We mean a good deal on a great place to stay. Because the right hotel can make or break a trip and a particularly great one can be a huge addition to a destination.

Sure sometimes a hotel is just a place to sleep for the night, and we always want to spend as little as possible for that while still having the amenities we like. But for a longer stay, we certainly try to find accommodations that have an interesting story to tell.

So when we look to book hotels in London,  such as an inn with an historic past or a modern state of the art high rise, we love lodging that enhances our travels.

We have also found that not only the building, but the attitude of the staff and management of a hotel can have a huge positive impact on our explorations of a place we have never been before. Come to think of it, they can really help in cities we have visited numerous times by recommending things we never knew about.

That kind of inside information is priceless, giving “cheap” even more value in any price range.  Having all of this material available at a moment’s notice is truly incredible.

We often speculate on just how much more difficult finding places to stay would have been in the days before the World Wide Web.  It is hard to believe that we could have possibly researched and booked rooms all around the world using only phone books, magazines, faxes, and snail mail.

Nowadays we can hardly envision gallivanting around the globe the way we do without all of the knowledge, foresight, recommendations, and values we find with one click online. Lucky for us we have all of that information at right at our fingertips.

No time better than the present to put it to good use and start planning our next adventure.

Market your Business!

How would you make customers if people do not know about your existence? Therefore, market your business. Do not chase those traditional marketing practices; instead, look for what is trending. You can work on creating a monthly newsletter for your subscribers. It would cover your services and perhaps, some special discounts for customers.

Besides, if you think social media is enough, no, it is not. This is an online world which demands a virtual office in the shape of your website. Thus, focus on creating a website that represents your brand incredibly since 94% of customers make an impression about your brand through it. Alongside this, do not forget to optimize it for the search engine to appear in front of the customers. You can also host giveaways to expand your customer reach or take part in trade shows to get the hang of the market.

We are convinced that there are two kinds of people in the world, those that love boats, and everybody else. That is why some folks feel like Kenneth Grahame said in The Wind in the Willows,  “There’s nothing––absolutely nothing––half so much worth doing as messing about in boats.”

We learned which side of that equation we resided on a long time ago, over thirty years back as a matter of fact. That was when we bought our first vessel, The Busted Flush.

She was a forty foot steel hulled monster that drank fuel like a sailor drinks rum and taught us the true meaning of the phrase Rust Never Sleeps. But we were hooked… line and sinker. From that day on we lived by our own saying “Any day that we spend some time on a boat is a good day.”

For years we kept her on Percy Priest Lake outside of Nashville, Tennessee, until we moved down to the US Virgin Islands.

We briefly considered taking The Flush with us down to the Caribbean, but better judgement prevailed. She never would have survived in the salt water.

So rather than have her spend eternity in Davy Jones’ locker, we bought another, an Albin 27 Family Cruiser, and put her into port at Christiansted on St. Croix.

We took it out weekends to the nearby Buck Island National Park, and on some longer cruises across to St. John and St. Thomas. Once we even took her on a week-long adventure through the British Virgin Islands.

Even though the marina was right below our condo, certainly closer than we were to the boat when we were in Nashville, it wasn’t quite close enough, but with three kids still at home we needed more room than our little Rising Sun could provide for any long term or live aboard possibilities.

But now, after another decade has passed and we live aboard our 38 foot Rawson Trawler Gaviota, and love it. With just the two of us these days it is just about perfect.

However, under the heading of the grass is always greener, we have surmised that this is might not be the ultimate situation.

We have decided that the ideal arraignment would be to have our own private port. So we have been looking into it, even if it is only a dream for now. All we would need is a bit of waterfront property with a house.

Then we could get started building our own dock.

It turns out that it isn’t all that difficult.  After all, we are not talking about one of those wonders of the world that we love to visit, just a nice, private place to keep our boat.

Oh, and to swim, and fish from, and grill, and just all around hang out by the water.  Then, as Otis Redding so eloquently sang, we could be Sittin’ on the dock of the bay, wastin’ time. That sounds pretty darn good to us.

Who knows, we might even rediscover Skinny dipping. Good thing we would have the added bonus of privacy.

How to Install a Water Tank: A Start-To-Finish Guide

Considering installing a water tank on your property? You’ve come to the right place – This is a complete guide to water tank installation. Apart from being able to reduce your bills and have a positive impact on our environment, collecting in a water tank has plenty of benefits for you.

Water Tank Installation

Before you stall the installation process, make sure you have a quality water tank! Companies like The Water Tank Factory have the best and high-quality water tanks –  If you don’t buy a good tank than leaks are sure to happen.

You will also need to check with your local officials and make sure you don’t need approval before installing a new rainwater tank.

Now let’s move onto the installation – We’re going to break this into 3 simple steps to install your new water tank at home.

Step 1 – Positioning and Base

The first step to installing a new water tank is finding a proper place for it. You want to look for a spot that will be easily accessible and close to a downpipe.

It will need to be on solid and flat ground, either find a place that already has a concrete or another form of hard platform. If there isn’t a platform already in place, consider laying down a bed of sand or making a platform with either timber or steel.

A basic platform or base provides not only stability but also allows the tank to be lifted. Having the ability to lift your tank will allow you to fill buckets or watering cans with ease!

When you place the tank, ensure that all outlet connections will be easily accessible as well!

Step 2 – Connections

Depending on the tank you purchase, some tanks may require you to cut an inlet or overflow hole.  Use either a jigsaw, keyhole saw, or hole saw to cut an accurate hole!

Now is time for installing the fittings – depending on the fittings you use, some will require you to use silicone around them to install it permanently, while others don’t so you may remove if necessary – so check with the specific instructions with the fittings you purchase.

Next, you want to remove the downpipe from the elbow and redirect to the inlet of your tank. Use a combination of 45-degree and 90-degree elbows! (When assembling PVC, use pipe primer and adhesive).

This is where you will also install a water filter if desired as well – This is recommended to help clean your water before it reaches your tank.

Step 3 – Outlets

Most outlet holes are blank, so you will need to drill a 25mm hole – this is where the tap or hose will screw into the tank so make sure not to damage any thread.

When you screw into your outlets, remember to use Teflon tape, this will prevent leaks.

That’s all there is to installing a basic water tank for your property!

Adding a Water Pump

If your new water tank doesn’t sit high enough for gravity, then you will need to add a water pump to your new water system.

When adding these make sure to use a flexible hose between the pump and tank so as not to damage the new pump from vibrations.

Wrapping Up

Now just follow these 3 simple steps and your water tank installation will be a breeze!

4 Tips to Avoid Travel Accidents

In the U.S. alone, more than 143 million road users commute on roads where also tens of millions more share the same roads while traveling on foot or bicycle every day. In such a scenario road accidents are bound to occur involving a variety of people using different modes of transport. Unfortunately, road accidents have been growing due to a variety of reasons chief among them being crumbling infrastructure, traffic congestion, dangerous driving behavior, distracted driving, poor infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists and disregard for traffic rules from a variety of road users.

The alarming statistics of road accidents indicate that 32,675 fatal car accidents took place in the United States in 2014 and went up to 37,133 in 2017. More disturbing is the accidents involving pedestrians surged 46% over a 9-year period since 2008 in urban areas.

While the government has enacted America’s Transportation Infrastructure Act of 2019 authorizing $287 billion to be used over the next five years to maintain and repair roads and bridges in the U.S., it is up to you the drivers, pedestrians and cyclists to take care of yourselves by taking appropriate steps to avoid accidents as far as possible. To help you in this endeavor here are 4 steps you can take to protect yourselves from being involved in accidents.

1. Understand the physics of motion

Remember that simple physics tells you that no two objects (human, animal or inanimate) can occupy the same space. If anyone tries to do so, accidents will happen. If one of the objects is traveling at higher speed and carries a lot of weight (like a bus or a car) and these two objects try to occupy the same space then what will ensue is a huge accident (because of momentum). Obviously, the heavier object traveling at higher speed will make mince meat of the lighter objects (humans, kids and animals) traveling at lower speed. These will result in fatalities and heavy damage to property as well. Recognize the status of each one of you on the roads and behave responsibly towards others following all rules.

Pedestrians must take special care because you are at the receiving end of accidents and will be hurt the most including possibly losing your life. Don’t ever challenge a heavier vehicle. If you get into an accident and it wasn’t your fault or wrongdoing, its important to be aware of your rights. In general, you will be able to make a claim for your pedestrian injuries and receive compensation. Many people are not aware of this, and then end up losing out when injured.

2. Keep vehicles in top running condition

Keep your vehicle in tip top condition. This is important because your vehicle must respond to you especially when you want to stop suddenly or swerve to avoid hitting something or someone. Similarly, all danger indicating visual and audio signal devices such as brake lights, horns, backing signals and side indicators must function properly so that correct indications are given to other road users. Other aids such as wipers, rear-view and side view mirrors must be functional.

3. Follow traffic rules diligently

You must realize that millions of road users step out on to the roads. If they don’t follow the mandated rules accidents will occur causing injuries and fatalities to a large number of people besides damage to property. It is incumbent on you to remember all the traffic rules and follow them faithfully. With increasing road usage following rules is all the more important and necessary for safety of all concerned.

4. Personal integrity

When using public roads it is everyone’s duty to exhibit personal integrity in following rules, maintaining order, not resorting to drug and alcohol abuse, intense focus on roads when driving or riding or walking, using designated corridors for traveling, observing safety precautions (wearing seat belts, helmets, child harness) and not traveling on footboards. If you are not well for any reason you should avoid using the roads and if you still need to then you must not drive and must be accompanied by an assistant. Be courteous to other road users. Never multitask or get distracted while driving, riding or walking.

Remember, there is no place for emotions on the roads. If you want to avoid accidents respect the others’ right to be on the road and even if the other person is a moron don’t get into a sparring match.
