What To Do In Singapore, The Most Urbanized Country In The World

If you thought the US was urbanized, think again. Like Hong Kong, Singapore sits on a tiny patch of land, surrounded in all directions by Malaysia or the ocean. The city has had to build upwards instead of outwards, producing its iconic skyline and impressive urban landscape. Planners have made use of practically every square inch, looking for efficiencies wherever they can.

Singapore has been popular among western tourists for many years for a couple of reasons. First, it’s a wealthy place, meaning that the experiences you can have here are as good as anywhere in the world. It’s a place of high-fashion, shopping, and Michelin star restaurants.

The second is the strange mish-mash of cultures. Unlike the west, Singapore’s wealth didn’t come out of a libertarian tradition. Instead, it developed along different values yet still managed to construct itself into an incredible city with many of the features you’d expect from a location like New York or London.

So what should the keen traveler do if coming to this place? Singapore is about more than work and clean streets. Thanks to its role as a trading point, there’s a culture here that dates back to the eighteenth century. For that reason, it offers some of the best markets and attractions in the whole of Asia.

The Singapore Zoo

If you’re in the mood for a relaxing afternoon in the presence of animals, then it is well worth paying a visit to the Singapore Zoo – a 28-hectare site playing host to hundreds of animal species from all over the world. Here you’ll see otters, pygmy hippos, lions, zebras, orangutans, and plenty of tropical bird species.

The zoo is split up into sections. There’s the traditional zoo area, which contains all the usual megafauna. Then there’s the Jurong Birds Park, which has more than 400 species of bird, the River Safari, which has the world’s most extensive collection of freshwater fish, and the Night Safari, which offers encounters with nocturnal creatures.

Haw Par Villa

The Haw Par Villa is one of the weirdest places in the whole of Singapore. It’s a little bit like a theme park that’s home to a bunch of statues depicting Chinese folklore. Be prepared for some unusual sights, such as an old woman being breastfed and a pot-bellied monk smirking while riding a water torrent.

If you’re interested in the end times, there are also statues depicting punishments in hell. It’s not for the faint of heart – that’s for sure.

Singapore’s Street Food

Checking out street food is the quintessential travel tip whenever you go to an Asian city, but it really applies here in Singapore.

What’s interesting about the city’s street food scene is how it exists in the context of one of the most expensive cities in the world. You can pick up an entire meal here for a couple of bucks, prepared right in front of you, even though a banana in the superstore costs $5.

The current advice is to head to the city’s Chinatown and sample some of the vendors here. The cuisine is a mixture of traditional Chinese with heavy influence from Malaysia. Many of the people who migrated here have set up stalls selling their favorite cuisines, with some pulling ideas right out of their mothers’ kitchens.

Be prepared to find some unusual fruits on your travels. Jackfruit, heart and palm, and others are all popular here. Also, be sure to check out the rice cakes and chicken rice. Super delicious.

Indulge On A Rooftop Bar

If you’ve ever seen a Singapore condo for rent online, you’ll know that the city is pretty much vertical. There are office blocks and residential towers galore. And unless you’re perched on top of one of them, it’s almost impossible to get decent views.

Singapore is a gigantic place. And many of the venues in the middle of town, near the harbor, have rooftop bars where you can grab a drink or get something to eat.

One of the best bars is One Altitude, which is located on a new development just across from the central business area. Here you get views of the downtown area, the water, and the rest of the city as it rumbles off into the distance. Be sure to order the fish if you frequent this particular venue. And don’t forget to make new friends along the way. Singapore is the ideal location for this.

So, there you have it – what to do in the most urbanized country in the world.

Seeing Double: Another Mona Lisa

We just learned that there is another Mona Lisa. That’s right; Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece in the Louvre is not alone. The Mona Lisa

“You learn something new every day.”

My mother liked to say that, and while it may not always be true as we get older, back then it certainly rang true. Well I’m happy to say it is true again today.

We just learned that there is another Mona Lisa. That’s right; Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece in the Louvre is not alone.

In fact, the other one, the Isleworth Mona Lisa, has been known about for years but is recently getting some well-deserved attention, so when we heard about it, naturally we had to investigate.

The Isleworth Mona Lisa

While we can hardly claim to be experts, we can share what we discovered.

The work is an oil on canvas from the early sixteenth-century and depicts a younger rendition of the same woman, Lisa del Giocondo, as the more famous painting hanging in the Louvre. Yet even though it is over five hundred years old, it was not very well known to the public until 1913.

That is when an English art enthusiast named Hugh Blaker acquired it from a mansion in Somerset and was convinced that there were two versions of Da Vinci’s portrait, and that the Isleworth version was actually the first one.

This would definitely be huge news, but proving these things can be tricky.

One problem is that Da Vinci, for all of his acclaim as an artist, didn’t produce many paintings. So there is not a lot to compare the Isleworth Mona Lisa to. Then again, we can make the comparison to the famous work in the Louvre, and several experts having done just that concluded that this is an original work by Leonardo da Vinci.

Even scientists have weighed in on the mystery. Over thirty years ago research physicist John Asmus from the University of California ran a number of tests and determined that the same artist painted at least the face in both works.

Later, professors Salvatore Lorusso and Andrea Natali of the Università di Bologna did extensive analysis and also arrived at the conclusion that this was Da Vinci’s work.

But perhaps some of the most compelling arguments come not from science or art experts, but from history.

For centuries it has been known that Raphael made a sketch of the Mona Lisa in 1504 after seeing it in Leonardo’s studio. The sketch’s background includes two Greek columns, which are not found in the Louvre’s Mona Lisa but are present in the Isleworth version.

In 2017 even the Louvre Museum got in on the debate when they published a story by Vincent Delieuvin that speculates how Raphael must have based his work on a Mona Lisa other than the one in the Louvre.

Still, even in the face of all of this evidence, many in the art world are unconvinced. Many point to the fact that the Isleworth painting is on canvass and Da Vinci generally worked on wood. However, there are several examples of the master using canvas as a medium.

So in 2012 the Mona Lisa Foundation of Zurich officially unveiled the painting and began displaying it in various public settings. They also presented their research and opinions as to the painting’s authenticity, which they feel strongly points to the Isleworth Mona Lisa being the work of Leonardo da Vinci.

Now, as we said at the beginning, we don’t claim to be experts, but everything we have seen leads us to the same conclusion.

And just goes to show that we still can learn something new… at least some days.

Speaking of which, Hong Kong’s offerings include the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, Ocean Park, Hong Kong Disneyland, endless shopping, foot massages and what-not; the list is merely endless. There is an activity for every type of interest.

Right now, we will write about five interesting things you should add to your Hong Kong vacation bucket list.

Things To Do In Your Vacation In Hong Kong

Take A Ride On The Star Ferry

Oh, if you are visiting Hong Kong, you must try out a ride on the star ferry. The Hong Kong Star Ferry is somewhat similar to the Effiel Tower in Paris, France. By this we mean, it’s a must see and must do! The Hong Kong Star Ferry transports people easily and effortlessly between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island.

The Star Ferry will enable you to marvel at all that Hong Kong has to offer; the famous skyline, all the scenic routes in the city, and, more importantly, the beautiful night view. Best of all, a trip across the harbor won’t even cost you US$1.00.

The Victoria Peak

Victoria Peak does share some similarities to the Star Ferry. Whereas people enjoy the views of Hong Kong from the sea onboard a Star Ferry, visitors to Victoria Peak, will take in the views of the city from a towering mountain.. From the Peak you can see across to the New Territories, and will be treated to a beautiful view of the harbor. The mountains on Victoria Peak boast of a plethora of vantage points, two of the most popular ones are the: Peak Tower & Peak Galleria. The Peak Galleria offers free access to an observation deck, and it’s even got a kid’s play area with a lot of climbing equipment.

Finally, on top of Victoria Peak, there is a 2-long mile “peak circle walk.” This takes the tourist to the cliffside road leading to the scenic Lugard Road Lookout Point. And are you a total shopper? Forget the walk around the peak and instead just shop.  Victoria Peak offers some of the most original shops in Asia.

Street Markets

There is a mighty big chance that if you are in the city of Hong Kong that you have collided with the shopping frenzy of the buzzing city. Hong Kong has some of the most bustling street markets in Asia, and you should try them all  – well, as much as you can!

Let’s talk a little about the street markets.

We have the famous “Ladies Markets On Tung Choi Street,” this market specializes in the sale of women’s accessories. Another convenient fact is all of these bazaars have their own unique aura.

The Temple Street Night Market, for example, is a favorite tourist place for nocturnal shopping and to get the fun going.

Additionally, if you find yourselves in any of these street markets, do not shy away from trying to bargain down the prices. You can expect to find some great deals. From time to time, some of these markets also have performers. At times they will showcase Opera Singers to magicians and what-not.

The markets operate on their different preferred times. You can check out their websites and Savvy in HK  for more information on what you need to know for your upcoming Hong Kong travel.

Ocean Park

Hong Kong Ocean Park is the direct competitor to Disneyland in the city. Ocean Park has a lot of great perks going for it. It has a uniquely amazing view along the coastline, it has an incredible zoo that is home to a large variety of animals, and also a large aquarium. Ocean Park has all the sharks and rays that you could want.

Roller coasters, carnival games, and other various fun activities are proudly offered at Ocean Park. If you are in Hong Kong for a family vacation, your kids will most definitely love to ride in the cable-car or take the underground train to the otherside of the park.

Best of all, Ocean Park is close to the enchanting Repulse Bay. If you still have energy left out, head next to Repulse Bay and enjoy a beer and pizza along the foreshore, and while you’re out it check out the traditional temple that is right there on the beach.

The Hong Kong Museum Of History

I understand the purpose of vacations is to relax, but who says we cannot learn a bit as we have fun? The Hong Kong Museum of History has managed to squeeze in a huge amount of the city’s history into its 77,000 square foot area.  The history covers Hong Kong’s nearly 400 million years of history with tales from prehistoric times to the digital age. The museum contains a vast amount of information with more than 80,000 historical objects.

So, we recommend you spare a few couples of hours if you would like to jump aboard this historic ride.

The museum is so large, that it’s unlikely you can cover the whole area in a day. Come to the museum prepared so you know which area you want to explore.

An Honorable Mention

Now, we have listed five interesting things you should do in your Hong Kong vacation, but we feel we should also mention an idea for people who like to pamper themselves.  Hong Kong has some of the best nail salons in Asia, and you must try out some of them.

According to Savvy in HK,  these are some of the best Nail salons in Hong Kong:

    • Nail 20

Located in Sheung Wan, they offer one of the best manicure and pedicure services throughout the city. A standard manicure starts at around $90 and a pedicure at about $130. Plus, a handful of their staff members speak English at conversational levels.

    • Nail 88

Nail 88 is the best budget nail salon in Hong Kong. There is no competition to Nail 88 for the best cheap nail services. However, you must bear in mind that “cheap” does not necessarily imply substandard. If you are ok with a basic salon, the $48 and $98 price points for their services are a great bargain. It’s simply a steal!

Final Words

These are some Hong Kong experiences that should be on your bucket list for your next Hong Kong vacation, or if you are visiting for the first time. Tell us, which of these experiences you have tried or are looking forward to trying out.

What Are Common Types of Sexual Harassment Lawsuits?

Typically, sexual harassment is most often associated with professional environments. However, such behavior might also take place in other notable institutions…
CONTINUE READING >>

Sexual harassment has burgeoned into a serious problem in American workplaces. In 2016, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, also abbreviated as the EEOC, found that as many as 85 percent of all working women experienced this uncomfortable and sometimes painful act.

Though this offense violates pure common decency and the professional standards of conduct established by many organizations, it is sometimes poorly defined and not always easy to prove. A Charlotte attorney will request concerned parties read on to gain a better understanding of this action’s definition and the steps affected individuals must take to hold prospective perpetrators legally and civilly responsible.

Definition Of Sexual Harassment

The EEOC maintains that there are two distinct forms of sexual harassment: a hostile work environment and the quid pro quo variety.

A hostile environment occurs when an employee’s superiors or co-workers engage in improper actions, such as making comments about a person’s appearance or habits, displaying offensive pictures, poking fun at someone’s perceived sexual orientation, citing crude sexual jokes or offering unwanted sexual advances towards the victim.

The legal definition of quid pro quo means “something for something.” In the case of a sexual harasser, sexual favors in exchange for some beneficial result. For example, a male in an authoritative position might request that a female subordinate perform any number of sexual acts in exchange for professional promotion or even to maintain one’s current employment.

Where Can Sexual Harassment Occur?

Typically, sexual harassment is most often associated with professional environments. However, such behavior might also take place in other notable institutions, like schools. For example, a male or female professor at a college or university might engage in this reprehensible conduct with students or subordinate faculty.

Proving Sexual Harassment Occurred

Said behavior is considered improper conduct. Therefore, those who believe they have been victims of this offense can follow url here initiate a civil action known as a sexual harassment suit. That said, success in such an endeavor is not simple and requires that a potential plaintiff and their lawyer build a significant case against the accused. Case-building necessitates meeting specific legal guidelines and producing discernible amounts of evidence.

Harassment Cases

If sexual harassment can be proven against a claimant’s superiors or even co-workers, the company or organization in question could be held accountable and be required to compensate the victim. However, the plaintiff must clearly demonstrate that a hostile work environment or some type of quid pro quo action occurred.

Success in a sexual harassment suit often rests on the plaintiff’s ability to demonstrate a pattern of ill behavior. Ergo, the victim is encouraged to perform evidence-gathering activities, such as, writing down the names of the perpetrators, the times and dates said offenses happened, and keep meticulous records explaining the words the accused parties said or the malfeasant actions they took.

Solid pieces of evidence include communications, such as, emails, texts, and written notes documenting demeaning actions and pictures or videos of indecent actions. Moreover, plaintiffs who lost their jobs, were demoted, or suffered some other type of punishment they believe was attributed to this behavior should document when these events occurred.

Reporting the Incident

Arguably, the most important step a victim can take is to immediately report the event or actions in question. Failure to engage in this critical step often proves detrimental to many claims. A common defensive strategy employed by accused parties is to claim that such issues were not brought to the attention of pertinent company authorities. Creating a record of the incident demonstrates that the entity in question knew of the problem.

Familiarizing Oneself with Company Policies

Many companies or institutions have handbooks or written guidelines detailing expected employee conduct. Should they exist, these resources will often contain sections or chapters dedicated to discussing said establishment’s sexual harassment policy. Purported victims should read this information thoroughly and denote specific instances where superiors or other employees violated these standards.

Eyewitness Testimony

The strongest cases are built on the foundation of eyewitness testimony. Complainants are strongly encouraged to gather accounts of individuals who have either seen malfeasant acts occur or who were themselves victimized.

Filing a Sexual Harassment Claim

Prior to filing a civil suit, one must first address the issue with their employer or the EEOC. After reviewing the facts, the EEOC might initiate a lawsuit on the complainant’s behalf. Even in instances where the EEOC opts not to pursue the issue any further, the purported victim still might be authored a right-to-sue letter, which authorizes said subject to proceed with the appropriate civil actions.

Should You Have an Attorney Represent You for Your Car Accident?

Hiring an experienced accident lawyer is paramount to winning an injury claim. Here are the benefits of hiring a car accident attorney…
CONTINUE READING >>

If you suffer injuries in a car accident caused by a negligent road user, it is always right to consult a car accident attorney to help you in an injury claim. Remember, insurance companies have lawyers to represent them when evaluating your injury claim. Therefore, you also need to hire a reputable lawyer to level the playing field during car accident arbitration.

If you decide to do it by yourself, you can be assured of facing a team of experienced attorneys who have handled a significant number of cases for insurance companies. In such a situation, you will be at their mercy; since you are not familiar with court hearings or your legal rights. Such lawyers have spent the better part of their life negotiating claims on behalf of their clients, so you will find it challenging when mounting a sound argument against them.

Hiring an experienced accident lawyer from georgiaautolaw.com is paramount to winning an injury claim. Here are the benefits of hiring a car accident attorney.

Handle the Insurance Company on Your Behalf

As a car accident victim, you should view insurance companies as profit-making organizations. Insurance adjusters are smart in negotiating insurance settlements on behalf of their employer. Their negotiation process involves trying to reduce what a victim is paid or even refuting a well-grounded claim.

In addition, insurance adjusters are cunning; they might take advantage of your naivety by tricking you into making an incriminating comment that could negatively impact the settlement you deserve. Hiring an attorney to represent you can have a significant impact on the outcome of your claim.

Determine the Actual Value of Your Injuries

It is daunting to determine a settlement that is equivalent to the losses suffered. The motive of insurance companies is to convince a victim to accept a settlement that is not equitable.

An attorney who has handled a considerable number of injury claims can quickly determine the actual value of your claim. You may click for more here and learn the significance of hiring a professional lawyer for your case.

A lawyer will not accept a compensation offer that does not offset all your losses. The real value of your claim should include losses incurred in the past, and those that are likely to be suffered in the future.

File a Personal Injury Lawsuit if It’s Needed

An attorney can help you explore all legal options at your disposal. If an insurance company is not willing to make a reasonable compensation offer, a car accident lawyer can take the matter to a court of law on your behalf. Such a lawsuit is geared towards helping you get equitable compensation.

In most cases, filing a lawsuit will pressure insurance adjusters to make a sensible settlement offer.

Negotiate an Appropriate Settlement

A reputable lawyer will enter into negotiations with other legal professionals to make sure you receive the deserved compensation. Remember, an insurance adjuster is there to fight for the interests of his client. Therefore, you need a trusted car accident attorney that can match the prowess of insurance adjusters in negotiating a fair settlement. If you decide to do it on your own, you are likely to settle for less since you don’t know how such calculations are carried out.

Prove Liability for Your Damages

The most difficult part when negotiating an injury claim is to show with a preponderance of evidence that another person was at fault. This is the fundamental part of an injury claim. An insurance company will only compensate you if the actions of another caused the injuries.

It is human nature to shift blame and car accident injury claims are not an exception. It is, therefore, challenging to prove that another’s actions caused your injuries.

A competent car accident lawyer will screen evidence to determine who caused your damages. Determining that another’s negligence caused the accident is not enough to warrant compensation. You need to build a strong argument and obtain the necessary evidence to support your case. Your attorney will better handle all this.

Laws and Regulations Relevant to Your Claim

Insurance companies are expected to uphold all the clauses in an insurance contract. Interpreting such contracts requires someone with legal knowledge. A lawyer is equipped with the necessary skills to read through the contract and analyze it.

There are some laws and regulations that revolve around a car accident that only an attorney can identify and use to your advantage.

5 Ways Older Adults Can Avoid a Slip-and-Fall While Traveling

If you’re an older adult and you’re getting ready to travel this year, then you should watch out for slip-and-fall situations. A slip-and-fall can cause a broken hip or other injuries, and that’s certainly something you want to avoid…
CONTINUE READING >>

Fewer people are traveling this year. The airlines confirm it. It’s because of Covid-19 and health concerns.

While the pandemic is still raging, some individuals do need to travel for various reasons. That includes many older adults. Some are traveling for vacation, others to visit relatives or for business purposes.

If you’re an older adult and you’re getting ready to travel this year, then you should watch out for slip-and-fall situations. A slip-and-fall can cause a broken hip or other injuries, and that’s certainly something you want to avoid.

Here are ways that you can stay away from a slip-and-fall injury while traveling.

Bring a Cane with You

A study showed that over a six-year period, the mortality rate for those over 75 from a slip-and-fall more than doubled. That’s a troubling statistic.

Even if a slip-and-fall is not fatal, then you could still sustain:

    • A concussion or other head injury
    • Various broken bones
    • Bumps and bruises

One way that you can avoid this while traveling is to bring a cane with you to help you balance. A cane, if you use it correctly, is almost like a third leg. If you’ve had knee problems, then getting a cane is a smart idea.

Don’t Hurry

You might be eager to get where you’re going, but if you rush to get there, that’s often when a slip-and-fall occurs. Try not to run or walk too fast when you’re:

    • Moving through an airport
    • Walking through a bus terminal or train station

Going at a slow, deliberate pace will likely get you to where you’re going safely. You might not get there quite as fast, but you’ll arrive in one piece, and that’s what matters.

If you know that you have reduced mobility, you should leave the house a little bit earlier to make sure you have time to walk through the airport, bus terminal, etc. If you’re traveling with others, they should have no problem adjusting their pace to fit yours.

Consider a Wheelchair

If your mobility is quite bad, you may also consider getting yourself a wheelchair or motorized scooter. Some older adults who have had leg or back problems invest in one.

You don’t necessarily need to use it all the time. For traveling, when other people surround you, and you’re in unfamiliar territory, it can be a useful tool.

Don’t feel embarrassed if this is a time in your life you need a wheelchair or scooter. A little reduced mobility is natural, and it’s something many people eventually experience.

Use Escalators and Moving Sidewalks

Many older adults slip and fall when they try to use stairs. Stairs require more balance and agility than some older individuals have.

When you travel, you’ll often find that there are moving sidewalks in airports or train stations. Take advantage of them. You can stand on one side while faster-moving individuals pass by on the other.

You will often find escalators alongside stairs. You can use those as well. Sometimes one might be out of service, but there might be an elevator nearby that you can use instead.

Builders of most airports, bus stations, etc. have older adults in mind these days, not to mention others with reduced mobility. You should not find it all that difficult to get around.

Have Someone Else Carry Your Luggage

Some older adults have a slip-and-fall while traveling if they try to carry a heavy bag through a hotel lobby or to their room. If your balance is not the best at this point in your life, then you should attempt to concentrate more on that for your own safety.

Hotel or airport staff will be happy to help you by carrying your bags. It’s part of their job to see that you get safely to your destination, so call for help if you need it.

If you’re with family or friends, they might also take your bags if there’s no staff member around to do it. If you have the kids or grandkids along with you, put them to work. There’s no need for you to overburden yourself by trying to carry large, cumbersome suitcases.

Older adults love traveling in many cases, especially if you’ve reached retirement age. Now is the time you can explore the world like you always meant to do.

It’s best if you’re cautious, though, if you no longer have perfect balance. You don’t want to experience a slip-and-fall and a lengthy recovery process.
