That may not seem very important, but we certainly beg to differ. Beginning your trip from the right airport can make a huge difference in your overall experience for several reasons. Let’s say you want to fly from The United States to Spain, we suggest that you try looking for flights from Miami to Madrid.

Why? Well, for us there are a few important points we look for when choosing an airport to fly out of. First and foremost, we always check out how easy it is to get through all of the necessities that are required before you can even get to the gate.

Tasks such as ticketing, checking luggage, and going through security can pretty much ruin your day if they don’t go smoothly. The same can be said for when we return, we want to be able to clear through customs as quickly as possible and get back home to our own bed.

With the Miami International Airport’s recently completed renovations, all of these requirements are handled with impressive efficiency. The North Terminal, where international flights arrive and depart, now has fourteen ticket counters and eight lanes for security checks. And upon returning to Miami there are seventy two lanes for passport control in the international arrivals area.

These improvements mean you’ll be spending less time waiting in lines both coming and going. We are pretty sure every traveler likes that!

Another thing we look for in an airport is something to do while we wait and Miami International has got that covered as well with over eighty restaurants and shops. With everything from quick bites to gourmet dining, we can always find something to tickle our food fancy. There is even a vast variety of restaurants that feature local flavors to choose from so we can get one last taste of that Miami heat before we go.

And if we need any last minute gifts, or something we forgot, there are plenty of shops featuring almost everything we could ever desire. Whether its books or Brookstone, chocolate or Calvin Klein, toys, beauty supplies, or a number of duty free options, there is almost nothing we can think of that can’t be found.

Don’t feel like shopping? That’s Okay because Miami International has free Wi-Fi available throughout the Airport. That makes it easy to stay up to date with the news, or entertained with movies or games, or get a little last minute business done. There are also ATM and banking facilities, a post office, a currency exchange, and even cell phone rental should the need arise.

Next thing you know it will be time to board your flight from Miami to Madrid and take off for what Ernest Hemingway called “the most Spanish of all cities.”

On our last visit to the Spanish capital, we made a point to follow in his footsteps. Our trek took us to the Prado Museum, Parque de El Ritiro, Plaza Cibeles, The Palacio Real, and the The Plaza de Toros Monumental de las Ventas. All of which were beyond incredible.

We also can’t say enough about the amazing food, especially the tapas, that we enjoyed every day of our visit. We can’t talk about food in Madrid without highly recommending Sobrino de Botín. This historic restaurant holds a spot in The Guinness World Records Book as the oldest continually operating restaurant in the world. They have been serving nonstop since 1725. Not only that, it was also mentioned in Hemingway’s novel, The Sun Also Rises.

We believe that you should definitely forge your own path through this spectacular European city, but as always, we think local food should be near the top of every bucket list.

Canada is a popular traveling destination, especially during the summer. However, because of its long and bitterly cold winters, Canada is also a popular destination for winter sports lovers, such as those who want to go skiing or snowboarding. Canada has thriving, modern cities and rich culture along with plenty of wilderness and nature. Here are some things you might want to know about Canada before you visit:

Passport and Visa Requirements

Travelers to Canada require a valid passport and may also require a visa or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), depending on their country of origin. It’s important to check the requirements before you plan your trip. Each country has different requirements and these can change frequently, so make sure that you understand what documents and forms of identification you need to have, both for entry into Canada and also to return to your own country. 

Transportation Considerations

Getting to and from Canada usually means flying. You will probably fly into a large international airport in a large city such as Toronto, Quebec, or Montreal. Your best bet is to choose 2-3 areas and center your visit in those locations.

Canada has six time zones, so it’s important to check the time difference between your location and your destination. If you are traveling between time zones during your visit, make sure that you understand the differences in time so you won’t accidentally miss flights or reservations when you are traveling.

In addition to the size of the country and provinces, you should be aware that Canadian cities are also large and sprawling. This means that the distance to the center of the city from your hotel may be a lot farther and take a lot more time than you expect. In many places, you won’t be able to walk to attractions, and if you plan to use public transportation, you should make sure that it is available in your area. In general, you should try to get a hotel near the center of the city if possible. 

Customs and Etiquette

Canadians are known for being polite and courteous, so it’s important to be respectful of their customs and etiquette. For example, it’s common to say “sorry” even if you didn’t do anything wrong. Being disruptive, cutting in line, making a scene, or being confrontational may be considered to be rude by many Canadians.

You can also add some attractions that you might visit on any vacation, such as amusement parks and shopping.

Get Outside

Because Canada is a vast country with a relatively small population, there are huge tracts of unbroken wilderness. Even in the eastern, more populated areas of the country, you can easily find places to get out into nature. It would be a shame to visit this beautiful land and spend all your time in a city. Instead, make sure that you leave time in your itinerary for a visit to a national or regional park. Go hiking, look at the amazing views, or try an outdoor sport such as kayaking, skiing, or mountain biking. 

Remember, much of Canada is still wild and unless you understand how to stay safe in the wilderness, what to do when you are lost, and how to respond when you are confronted with wildlife, it’s best to stay near the main areas of the park and enjoy guided activities.

Amazing street performer in front of our hotel.

For a city of over three million people Madrid is surprisingly walkable. That was good for us, because we didn’t have a car, and our two days here were meant to be a warm up for our walking tour of the Basque country with VBT.

Another good thing was that our hotel, the NH Paseo del Prado, was right in the heart of the best that the city has to offer. The famous Prado Museum is directly across the street and, just beyond that, the Parque de El Ritiro.

We began our jet lag fueled first day of exploring in what Ernest Hemingway called “the most Spanish of all cities” with a walk in the park. While wandering the tree lined paths we came upon the Palacio de Cristal.

Just as the name sounds, this is a glass palace. It was originally a green house in this former royal retreat, but now plays host to an avant-garde art exhibit that includes a sinking Titanic and an upside down Empire State Building.

Exiting the park via the Puerta de Alcalá, a gateway that opens into the Plaza Cibeles, we were blown away by what must be the most spectacular city hall anywhere in the world.

Built as the headquarters for the postal service in 1919, the Palacio de Cibeles now hosts the city council in high style. Hope they appreciate the digs.

From there we headed up Madrid’s main thoroughfare, Calle Alcalá, leading to the city’s two main squares, Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor.

Along the way we took a slight detour down Gran Via, which Hemingway compared to Broadway and Fifth Avenue combined. This is the high end shopping and entertainment strip and certainly looked to live up to its name, the Great Way.

By getting back on the main drag we found the sun, or at least its plaza, Plaza del Sol. This is truly the center of town, actually for all of Spain, since it is where the mile markers begin for all of the roads across the country.

It is also known for a statue of a bear and madrono tree, which has been a symbol of Madrid for centuries.

Even though he has appeared on the city’s coat of arms since the early twelve hundreds, we couldn’t find a definitive answer as to why, or what the bear represents.

Just off the square we noticed a churreria and recalled our daughter, Decibel, describing the phenomenal churros she found on her trip to Madrid several years ago. That was more than enough motivation for us.

Unlike the ultra-sweet, donutesque versions we are used to, these are lightly fried crispy bread with almost no sugar. A cup of melted semisweet chocolate is served alongside for dipping and the result is subtle, yet out of this world.

Since we already got started on the snacking, we decided to take a Tapas break, as well as a break from the afternoon heat. We had noticed that many places have water misting over the outside seating and it felt heavenly to escape the hot Spanish sun.

We opted to blindly order a combination plate of five tapas and take our chances as to what might show up. Classic Iberian ham, fish with garlic, crab, salmon, and some ridiculously strong blue cheese arrived, so we were thrilled.

Well, maybe not so much with the blue cheese.

Oh, and I almost forgot, they brought out some of the best olives we have ever tasted. Seriously, ever! Those easily made up for the cheese.

Our big plan for day two was to make like Papa Hemingway and have lunch at Sobrino de Botín. In addition to being mentioned in his novel, The Sun Also Rises, Botín is certified by Guinness as the oldest continually operating restaurant in the world. They haven’t missed a meal since 1725.

To get ourselves in the mood for some serious eating, we stopped at the Mercado de San Miguel on our way.

If browsing the mouthwatering offerings didn’t build up an appetite, nothing would.

It was all we could do to fight back the urge to snarf down every tapa we saw in the vast array of meats, cheeses, olives, breads, and seafood.

Quick, we better get to Botín!

It was imperative that we have their signature dish, cochinillo asado, which is roast suckling pig. After all, that is what Papa ate and wrote about.

Another house specialty is sopa de ajo, a garlic soup laced with sherry and with an egg poached in the broth. Both were more than worthy of their fame and accolades.

For good measure, we also added some artichoke hearts with Iberian ham… unbelievable. They must not have had this dish back in Hemingway’s day or it would have deserved a whole chapter.

Over the rest of our time in Spain we learned the valuable lesson that absolutely everything is better, no, not just better, fantastic with Iberian ham.

An easy walk from the restaurant, we did come for a walking tour after all, brought us to the Catedral de la Almudena.

This massive cathedral was built directly across from the royal palace in order to bring the seat of the Church together with the government, but it took some time.

Even though the political capital of Spain was moved from Toledo to Madrid in 1561, it took until well into the eighteen hundreds to get started on the church. It seems that the monarchs were too busy with their vast overseas empire to get around to allocating the funds until then.

Across the huge courtyard from the church that could wait, it sure didn’t look as though they had any trouble finding the dough to build quite a house for themselves. The Palacio Real is one of the biggest palaces in Europe but, even though it is the official residence of the Royal Family, they live outside of town and use the palace only for ceremonial functions.

As far as we were concerned, considering the afternoon sun and the stretch in our bellies, siesta back at the hotel was the only ceremonial function that we were very interested at the time.

After a nap, we hopped on the metro for a short ride to get a peek at The Plaza de Toros Monumental de las Ventas, regarded as the cathedral of bullfighting. Now we can’t say that we condone the sport, but we could hardly follow in Hemingway’s footprints without coming here.

Don Ernesto, as he was known to the Spaniards, was most definitely a fan. He told his biographer, A. E. Hotchner, “Many a morning I’d get up at dawn and come down here to watch the novilleros, and sometimes even the matadors themselves coming in to practice…”

This is the largest ring in Spain, seating twenty-five thousand spectators, so it has a history beyond bullfighting. It has served as the venue for many momentous events, including a performance by The Beatles in 1965.

Behind the arena we found el Museo Taurino, the Bullfighting Museum. Paintings, sculptures, and artifacts depict the greatest moments of the Plaza de Toros. Perhaps the most popular displays are the bright suits and capes worn by the matadors, especially the famous suit of lights worn by the legendary Manolete the day he died from being gored.

On our way back to the hotel we debated that we should have disobeyed the no photography rule for a picture of that, but we were good.

For a final toast to Madrid, and Hemingway, we headed next door to the bar at the Palace Hotel. Due to its location so near the Prado, this was another of Papa’s favorite haunts.

While he would have hoisted a martini, we chose a refreshing cava.

Vaseline is a savior

Remember to always carry some Vaseline around with your camera and equipment. If you want a soft glow in portrait mode, then Vaseline will facilitate that.

Rub some Vaseline on the camera filter or use a bit of transparent plastic. This photography hack was popularised by the old Hollywood films of the 1940s.

Bokeh effect

You must have heard about the bokeh effect if you are serious about photography. ‘Bokeh’ is a Japanese word that can be translated as ‘blurry’. It is the blurry effect you get when a photograph is intentionally out-of-focus.

Cut out shapes from black cardboard. These could be hearts, circles, stars, and more. Cover the camera lens with these cut-outs. Then experiment with the focal lengths.

Nylon stockings filter

You could make use of the old nylon stockings that you no longer use. Put the stocking over your camera lens and attach it with a rubber band. If the stocking is white, the effect will be neutral. You could go for colored stockings for a better effect.

Plastic bag

Do you want photographs coming out a bit hazy? Love the mysterious vibe such photographs give? All you need is a plastic quart bag (like those used for sandwiches). Cover the camera lens with this, and you are all set to go.

Fishing wire

Do your outdoor shots need some extra zing? Then you must carry some fishing wire with you. Fix a bit of thin fishing wire across your camera lens. Don’t worry because the wire will not show in your photographs. Only the light flashing reflecting off it will.

Wool effect

Take a woolen sweater or a shawl and stretch it in front of your camera lens. This will give your photographic subject a soft frame. Remember to keep the focus on the subject and not the woolen cloth.

Tea strainer

Use a tea strainer to get the desired shadow and light effect on your portraits. Tea strainers are great when it comes to photographing close-ups of a subject’s facial features. If you change the distance, the pattern changes accordingly.

Reading glasses

If you want to get the lens-ball photography effect at no extra cost, then dig out your old reading glasses. Fix the reading glasses on your camera lens to get a magnifying effect.

Use an old CD/DVD

You still have a couple of old CDs or DVDs lying around right? You can now use them for this photography hack. Hold a CD or DVD in front of the camera lens to get the best lens flare you can without extra equipment.

Reflective paper

If you plan to start your photography career with product marketing, then you need lots of reflective paper. Wrap some cardboard with reflective paper. Place your product on a wrapped piece of cardboard. Place another such cardboard such that light reflects off it. You will get the perfect product photograph with the sole focus on the product only.

Glass table

You might have a glass coffee table in the living room. If so, you can use it to get terrific results. Place the photographic subject under the table’s glass top and sprinkle some pieces of glass for extra effect. This will guarantee a frosty look.

Tinsel and metallic streamers

Metallic streamers are excellent as frames for a headshot. If you need a headshot and the background seems absolutely vile, then adding a couple of metallic streamers can make the headshot stand out.

Sheet music or book pages

Sheet music or pages from books can work wonders when it comes to photography. Get someone to drop sheets of music or pages from books as you prepare to take shots with your camera.

Remember that as a photographer it is essential for you to get a good camera, proper equipment, and client referrals. Money is important in this business. Selling a couple of your photographs as stock images is not a bad idea.
