So we have finished up another life-long learning experience with our favorite not-for-profit company, Road Scholar. For the first time in our many adventures with them we explored by ship on the Aegean Odyssey, which beginning April 2020 will be exclusively sailing as a floating campus for Road Scholar.
Here are the highlights of our ten days across the Greek Isles!
#Athens boosts the best kept temple in all of #Greece – the Temple of #Hephaestus in the #Ancient #Greek #Agora. Hephaestus is the god of craftsmanship-so it makes sense it’s still standing tall since 420 BC.#Exploring #Greece with @roadscholarorg #travel #architecture pic.twitter.com/1IT690p49F

The incredibly hospitable Papa Kosta welcomes us to Church of the Dormition. We came to see the 1562 #ElGreco painting in the foyer, and found ourselves entranced by the full interior of the #church.

In a area famous for its #sunsets, #Santorini is going all out and really putting on a show for us!

Just because we are aboard a Floating Classroom (click in to our feed to learn the philosophy!), doesn’t mean we aren’t spoiled. An ode to those who take care of us after our days in the field!

The #Kos #Archaeological #Museum houses some of the most impressive statuary we’ve seen. How is it possible to make marble do this?! Look at the LAYERS of clothing-the draping. Also, much homage to hometown hero, #Hippocrates.

The #Tree of Hippocrates lives on the #Greek #Island of #Kos, the birthplace of the Father of Modern #Medicine. 2,400 years ago, Hippocrates taught students under the boughs of the ancestor of this 500 year old tree!

Want to storm the #Medieval Old City of #Rhodes? As you dodge flaming arrows, you’ll crash gates, cross two moats, & get bottlenecked in narrow streets. Thankfully, we have our field trip expert, Dionysios, leading the charge!

Good morning from #Rhodes – it’s not every day we wake up at the feet of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World!

Let’s talk about bull leaping. This ritual was big in the #PalaceOfKnossos on #Crete, depicted in various forms of #art. The bull is seen throughout the #Palace as a symbol of strength so jumping was an obvious next step?

A bit about our Floating Classroom, #Aegean Odyssey. W/300 passengers, we explore intimate ports. Onboard, while at #sea, we attend lectures by professors of #art & #history, even the Mayor of a city we are visiting! As a #photographer, I have a thing for a well-done #arch and #Monemvasia does not disappoint! Strong & beautiful, arches add character to a place-tho maybe it’s a bit overboard here? Nah.

Blown away! The art of the Parthenon covers top floor of the Acropolis Museum and is beautifully exhibited in a perfect replica of the temple.

Nothing is more iconic than the #Acropolis in #Athens and the #Parthenon is the icon of the Acropolis! Towering over the city, this temple to #Athena – the founding #Goddess – looms majestic from every angle.
