Rather than feel hopeless about the situation, you need to connect with family that you no longer see physically on a regular basis. If you’re not tech-savvy, now’s a great time to get used to using a phone, tablet and computer. In doing so, you’ll be able to video chat with your children while they’re away. You may even want to designate a specific hour each day to chatting with your kids.

Find an Engaging Hobby

A hobby will do wonders for keeping you busy throughout the day. There are so many different options available when trying to pick a hobby that works for you. From gardening to fish keeping and everything in between, the key is to find something that you enjoy and that will take up a great deal of your time. Designate a few hours each day to engaging in this hobby and track your progress. You may find that you enjoy gardening and love to take photographs of your work to share with family and friends.

Reach Out to Other Empty Nesters

When your kids are out of the house and living their own lives, it can be difficult to hang around other parents who are still incredibly active with their children. This isn’t to say that you should give up on past friendships, but it might be time to find new ones who share similar interests. By making friends with other empty nesters, you’ll also have someone to talk to and hang out with throughout the day when you’re feeling alone.

De-stressing can help your anxiety and depression after the kids leave the house. You need to find de-stressing methods that work for you. For some parents, they might choose to use this time to get fit and exercise more often. Others may take up yoga, deep breathing or meditation.
