Learn about the food, spirituality and history of these amazing people in their own words.
The Gullah people, a culture brought to the New World in chains that created a language of its own, grown out of the isolation of the Sea Islands of Georgia and South Carolina. You’ll meet a top Gullah Chef, a columnist for a local Hilton Head newspaper, a very informative tour guide, a preacher, a dancer and see the plans for the Historic Mitchelville Project.

Thanks Jay, interesting photos, thanks for the link.
We are definitely going to run into each other again as we keep going to the same places! I’m headed to Hilton Head in a week for a girlfriends getaway. I vaguely knew about the Gullah culture, but this article is really eye-opening and I’m going to make time to learn more while I am there. Thanks for sharing.
Hope our paths do cross. Glad to let you know about the Gullah people, their story is very interesting.
Wow, I’m blown away by this post. My mother has lived on Hilton Head for more than 10 years and I knew very little of this history until now. I’m going to send this link to Mom and insist she take the tour!
If you’re still in HH now, you should check out the restaurant I wrote about in this post (if you haven’t already). Delicious! http://2summers.net/2011/09/11/36-hours-in-the-lowcountry/
The tour is very worth taking. We love the low country and will have to check out Roast Fish and Cornbread next time we are down there. It looks great, thanks for the tip.
Really interesting about this area. I certainly want to go when I'm there in a few weeks. What was the tour that you took? Sounds like a knowledgeable guide.
Suzy,
They were great, very knowledgeable, friendly and fun. It's called Gullah Heritage Trail Tours. You can find them at:

Have fun.

We need to get acquainted. I'm a writer working on a novel about the founding of the Penn Center. Headed to Beaufort/Hilton Head next week to do some local Gullah research.
