I think we might be doing this in a few months too, so thanks for the preview! Do you mind me asking how much it cost you?
Don’t really know Katie, it was part of a tour we were on with Road Scholar. Don’t think the train is all that expensive though.
The train ride was great but the 4 day trekk along the Inca-Trail was 1,000,000 times better
Don’t know that we are up to that anymore.
Oh wow, I love those glass domes in the roof of the train! Beautiful scenery.
The train cars are great for seeing the scenery as it goes by.
Your pictures are beautiful and really capture the beauty of the train ride to Machu Picchu. I always tell people that the train ride was like being in a National Geographic documentary. I loved Peru and would go back in a heartbeat. Handsdown my favorite country in Latin America.
Thanks Lila, it is a great train ride.
I love this post! The pictures are so lively and beautiful. What a wonderful journey. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Mary!
This post really brings back memories of my trip to Machu Picchu. I agree — kudos for the great photo of the woman with the bag. The train ride to the Sacred Valley was great, but my biggest memory is the trip back: we sat on the track for two hours while men worked to clear a ton of rock off the track after one of the area’s frequent landslides.
Wow, things like that can really form our travel memories.
Such an interesting trip to Machu Picchu. Thanks for the information about the alternative ways going to this beautiful world heritage.
I love, love, loved taking the train to Aquas Calientes and the whole Macchu Pichu experience. BTW – That photo of the woman carrying the bag is stunning!
Thanks, love that picture too.
I was on this train last May. Very nice. Oddly, what I most clearly remember are the fresh cut flowers in the men’s room at the station in Ollantaytambo. 🙂
Interesting. I guess I missed that.
That looks like a way nicer train than the one I took to Machu Picchu about 15 years ago. I remember there being goats and chickens on board!! And it was so crowded everyone was totally squished in the standing room. It was the train for locals, not the tourist train.
There are 3 different trains, the local, the one we took, and a luxury version. We heard that they no longer allow people from out of Peru on the local.
Brilliant scenery ~ nicely edited ~ Can’t wait for your video of Machu Picchu, itself ~ All the very best to you both, Take care ~ Geoff
Gracias!
De Nada !
That was sooooooooo cool!
