Forget the percentage – take a good look at the plant. Are the trichomes those tiny, hair-like outgrowths that appear frosty and plentiful? This is a good sign. Trichomes, not the buds themselves, are where the cannabinoids and terpenes are produced and stored. Gently touch the flower. Does it have a little bounce to it, or does it turn to powder in your fingers? If it’s the former, you have a sign this flower was properly dried and cured to protect those volatile compounds we just spoke about. It’s also another indication this plant was harvested close to its peak, rather than prematurely.
Does the flower have a strong, distinct aroma, or does it only smell generically “skunky?” Are you able to pick out specific notes like pine, citrus, or cherry? A smelly flower isn’t just a stinky flower. Terpenes are secreted in the same gland that processes the cannabinoids, so a potent terpene profile is a good clue you’ll get a full-spectrum experience, rather than just a THC high.
Finally, don’t be afraid to just ask for the lab results. Whether you pick up from a local shop or buy bulk weed online, always request complete terpene and cannabinoid lab reports rather than trusting the THC sticker on its own. Any reputable grower will have their product tested for not only potency but mold, pesticides, bacteria, and residual butane. More importantly, those tests will also tell you the flower’s minor cannabinoid and terpene content. Sellers who resist sharing this information are telling you something.
Tolerance Turns High Potency Against You
Using high-THC cannabis regularly makes your cannabinoid receptors less responsive. So to get the same effects, you may have to increase your use, which can get costly and may lead you to take more of an intoxicating substance than you want to. Opting for lower-potency flower that contains a variety of cannabinoids and terpenes can help you achieve more consistent and manageable results.
Also, THC converts to CBN over time or with improper storage, which can lead to greater sedative-like effects not intended when you initially made your purchase.
The Bigger Shift In How People Buy
