Three Places of Historical Significance to Visit in India

It’s no secret that India has a long and colourful history, but rather than simply reading about this in a book or online, there are many incredible places of historical significance you could visit right now to get a taste of this history for yourself.

In this post you can find three examples of such locations dotted about this country you might wish to consider.

The Khajuraho Temples

These Hindu and Jain temples may also be called the ‘Khajuraho Group of Monuments’ and are found in Madhya Pradesh. The first of these are believed to have been built around 950 A.D. during the time the Chandela dynasty ruled, however, many more were built periodically as different rulers came and went.

These striking buildings are dominated by their tall rounded spires, but they also have layouts typical of all Hindu temples which mirror their beliefs and principles. Many of them are largely in tact and provide a captivating insight into religious life during this time.

Qutub Minar

Qutub Minar is a minaret which was once one of the largest in the world. It stands at 74 metres tall and was first built to go alongside the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque in 1192.

Largely intact, it is a World Heritage Site which means that when you visit you can find out more about the history of the minaret including how it survived lightning strikes, earthquakes and several rebuilds and additions.

Ajanta Caves

Another World Heritage Site, the Ajanta Caves are a series of caves and rock sculptures in the Aurangabad District that date back as far as the 2nd century. There are roughly 29 caves to explore that are believed to have been built by Buddhist monks.

As well as being quite a site to behold from the outside (as these are carved into the side of a rocky hillside) it’s inside where they really come to life. There’s fascinating paintings and carvings depicting what life was like for monks and settlers during this time.

To help yourself get a really thorough understanding of the true history behind these (and any other) historical Indian treasures, it can be a good idea to properly plan your trip and seek expert help to find tours and guidance.

So, what are you waiting for? Get your trip arranged and discover the delights of the Indian cultures and traditions of the past and learn incredible new facts and information about this amazing country.
