What Are the Negative Side Effects of CBD Oil? The Truth Revealed

You see it in stores everywhere. Your friends constantly recommend its mystic qualities for every ache and pain you voice. It’s CBD, and it can cure everything, right?

If you’re skeptical about whether there are any negative side effects of CBD oil, continue reading.

What Can CBD Treat

Some CBD education: CBD can be used as a prescription to treat seizures.  But prescription cannabidiol (CBD) oil needs further research to determine whether it has some of its other purported benefits.

CBD is a non-psychoactive chemical found in marijuana. That means you won’t experience any of the typical “highs” associated with marijuana. You can find CBD in many forms: extract, oil, and liquid. You can also find CBD infused drinks and food items.

But the only CBD approved product by the FDA is a prescription called Epidiolex. Epidiolex treats two types of epilepsy.

After Epidiolex, the laws on CBD vary from state. Because research is still sparse, many localities are on the fence about how effective and safe it is. On the other hand, CBD potentially treats a wide array of disorders and ailments, including MS, Parkinson’s, schizophrenia, and anxiety.

What Are the Risks and Negative Side Effects of CBD Oil

CBD carries many of the same negative side effects as marijuana. CBD can cause reduced appetite, drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth, and diarrhea. It can also interact with other medications such as blood thinners.

Perhaps the biggest concern for people who ingest CBD is regulating the dosage. Since the FDA hasn’t approved the CBD products most companies sell, there’s no telling what’s in them.

A recent study showed that 84 companies produced products that contained significantly less CBD than advertised. The study also showed 18 products contained THC.

Another cause for concern is the unregulated purity and dosage of CBD in products. A recent study of 84 CBD products bought online showed that more than a quarter of the products contained less CBD than labeled. Also, the study found THC in 18 products.

Pregnant Woman

Pregnant women should avoid CBD because the dosage and purity aren’t yet regulated. CBD products may contain other substances and chemicals harmful to the child.

Liver Disease

CBD products may cause damage to the liver if taken in high dosages. High dosages of CBD are especially risky for people who suffer from liver disease.

Parkinson’s Disease

Even though more research is needed, some research suggests taking high dosages of CBD can have a detrimental effect on Parkinson’s disease patients. Muscle movement and tremors can worsen in these patients.

Why CBD?

The exact effects of CBD are not yet known. But CBD’s pundits believe it has a low attraction to cannabinoid receptors in the brain. These receptors are responsible for the psychoactive effects of THC.

Instead, its advocates believe CBD attaches to opioid receptors that influence feelings of physical pain and glycine receptors, which can induce feelings of euphoria by releasing more serotonin.

Conclusion

If you’re considering taking CBD, stay aware of the negative side effects. The good news: most of the known negative side effects of CBD aren’t serious or life-threatening. But with so little research and knowledge, it’s best to remain informed and play it safe.
