Terry — originally from Castroville and daughter of the man with the inspiration — sent us the Giant Artichoke!
“Planted in the middle of the small town of Castroville, California–“The Artichoke Center of the World”–many visitors over the years have written about, blogged about and reviewed this kitschy tourist stop, first opened around 1962 by my Dad. Back in the day, the Giant Artichoke was known as the best place to buy fresh artichokes in all the USA. Dad shipped all around the world and had some pretty famous repeat customers.
Now, the current owners don’t ship artichokes, but they still sell fresh chokes as well as fresh french fried artichokes in the deli. I usually make a beeline for the stand when I get to town. I’ll never stop loving those lucsious fried veggies—they are comfort food to me no less than the pizzas to Brooklynites or the pasties to the Yoopers!
I love reading and following the Gypseynester’s and I would be honored and most pleased if you would post a photo or two from the Giant Artichoke.”
Thanks so much Terry!
