CBD Fun Facts: Everything You Need to Know About Using CBD

Did you know that Queen Victoria’s doctor advised her to use marijuana to alleviate menstrual cramps? Medicinal marijuana has a surprisingly long history; other famous users include George Washington, William Shakespeare, and John F. Kennedy.

Nowadays, many U.S. states are legalizing marijuana for both medicinal and recreational use. And another cannabis product, CBD, is experiencing its moment in the spotlight. There’s a bit of confusion surrounding CBD, how to use it, and what it is good for. That’s why we have compiled these CBD fun facts that are as informative as they are interesting.

1. CBD Use Dates Back to 2737 BC

The first documentation of CBD use dates back to 2737 BC! That’s when Chinese Emporer Sheng Nung used cannabis tea and recommended that his subjects do the same. It was used as a treatment for malaria, pain relief for sufferers of rheumatism, and a memory aid.

2. CBD Was First Isolated in 1943

CBD, also known as cannabidiol, was used for centuries as part of the cannabis plant. It wasn’t until the 1940s that scientists were able to identify and isolate the different compounds. American chemist Roger Adams is credited with isolating both CBD and THC, the compound that is responsible for marijuana’s intoxicating effects.

Even today, researchers are only beginning to understand the various compounds in cannabis and how they are beneficial to the human experience.

3. CBD Won’t Get You High

This is one of the most important facts to know about CBD. Unlike its cousin THC, the compound known as cannabidiol doesn’t have a psychoactive effect. In other words, you won’t get stoned, buzzed, or high by using it. What you do get is the strongest natural pain reliever.

Some varieties of CBD products — often labeled “full spectrum” — do contain trace amounts of THC. These minuscule amounts are incredibly effective at boosting the effects of CBD. Yet they aren’t enough to produce intoxication.

4. The CBD Market Is Huge and Growing

You have probably noticed an increasing number of shops that specialize in CBD products opening in your community. CBD is also sold at vape shops, vitamin and health stores, and even drugstores and supermarkets.

In addition, there are countless outlets online.

The fact that CBD is so easy to purchase, as well as the increase in consumer knowledge of it, means that the market is exploding. In fact, CBD sales are expected to top a whopping $20 billion in the United States by 2024.

5. CBD Is Used in Diverse Applications

Part of the explanation for this exponential growth is the fact that CBD uses are so diverse. It is sold as a supplement in a variety of forms including gummies, tinctures, creams and lotions, and capsules. Or it can be used in a vape with the right temperature when vaporizing. It is also being incorporated into pet products, skin care products and cosmetics, and an array of food and beverages.

6. CBD Can Help with Many Issues

CBD seems like a panacea to some, and it’s easy to see why. It has been used to treat seizures, depression, anxiety, insomnia, PTSD, neuropathic pain, inflammation, autoimmune disorders, ADHD, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, psoriasis, and many other health issues.

Research into CBD’s efficacy for these conditions and diseases is still in its infancy, but there is plenty of anecdotal evidence. Given its safety, CBD is often worth trying for what ails you.

7. CBD Is Making Its Way Into Pharmaceuticals

A huge vote of confidence for CBD was cast by the FDA in the summer of 2018. That’s when they approved a drug called Epidiolex, the first-ever pharmaceutical medication that is comprised of a marijuana-derived compound.

Epidiolex is an oral solution used to treat seizure disorders. Both Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome are rare and severe forms of epilepsy. They are often diagnosed in children, and Epidiolex is suitable for use in patients two years and older.

8. CBD is Less Risky Than THC

There are many proponents of THC and medical marijuana the world over. There is no denying that it can be very helpful for a number of conditions. Yet there are also some serious short- and long-term side effects of THC that users must take into consideration.

These include impaired thinking, difficulty reasoning, difficulty with organizational thinking and planning, poor impulse control, and impaired decision-making skills. Chronic THC use has been linked to abnormalities in both the brain and heart.

CBD, on the other hand, is not associated with these side effects. For that reason it is less risky than THC.

9. CBD Has Very Few Side Effects At All

CBD is remarkably devoid of side effects. Some users report nausea, irritability, drowsiness, and fatigue. These effects usually only occur at high doses. They are relatively mild, especially when compared to the cognitive impairment risks posed by THC.

The few side effects of CBD can generally be eliminated by reducing the dose, or changing the way it is administered.

10. Salves and Creams Made With CBD Target Pain

Many types of CBD products are meant to be ingested. It’s not necessary to ingest CBD to reap some of its benefits, however. Some people use it primarily, or exclusively, on a topical basis.

The main advantage of topical CBD use is that users can pinpoint problems and apply the ointment, salve, or cream directly where it is needed. Topical CBD can help with acute pain from muscle overuse. It’s equally effective for the aches of arthritis, bursitis, and other chronic conditions.

Skin issues are another area where CBD shines. Many people like to keep a CBD salve on hand for treating minor scrapes, lacerations, burns, bug bites, and the like. It can even be used for acne.

11. CBD Products Are Unregulated

One not-so-fun fact that is nevertheless important to know about CBD is that it isn’t regulated by the FDA — or any other governing body, for that matter. Therefore, it is essential for prospective users to do their homework.

Educate yourself about the various terms and industry jargon that appear on products’ packaging so that you can understand what’s inside. Make sure the amount of CBD per dose is listed so that you can monitor your intake.

An important measure of quality is the certificate of analysis, or COA. This reveals the results of tests that check for CBD and THC levels as well as the presence of contaminants. Products that have been independently tested are also good.
