10 Success Tips For Digital Nomads

Many people are drawn to the idea of becoming a digital nomad – the freedom of being able to earn money while travelling anywhere in the world. However, it’s not always as easy as many people think. Here are just a few tips that can help you to make this lifestyle work for you.

Invest in a secure bag

Your laptop is your livelihood, so you need to keep it secure. When choosing a backpack or a suitcase, prioritise security. One of these anti-theft travel bags could be worth considering.

Buy a decent portable charger

For times when there isn’t a plug socket available, a portable charger can come in handy. Some of the best portable chargers can carry multiple laptop charges, potentially allowing you to go days without access to electricity.

Research ahead into wi-fi

Most hotels, hostels and cafes around the world have wi-fi in 2020. But the quality of this wi-fi isn’t always great and may not always be free. Research this head when looking into accommodation or places to work from. There are sites that offer information on the wi-fi quality of hotels that you could use.

Use a VPN

Some networks that you log onto may not always be secure. Using a virtual private network (VPN) allows you to keep your connection secure so that personal information isn’t stolen.

Look into portable wi-fi

There are portable wi-fi routers that you can buy that give you internet access on the go. These can be useful if you can’t find good quality internet. Some of these work on a pay-as-you-go basis, so you can top them up when you need to.

Find ways to work offline

There may be some work that you can do offline. This could give you more freedom to travel to remote areas while still continuing projects. Prepare for these offline days by saving any emails or web pages that you think you may need.

Minimize meetings

Meetings can be a nuisance when travelling. While you can rely on phone calls and video calls, you need a good connection. Meetings also need to be scheduled, which can limit your ability to work flexibly (changing time zones can also complicate things) Try to communicate as much information by email as you can rather than having to schedule out meetings so that you’re able to work more flexibly.

Consider a virtual address

Need to receive physical mail? With virtual address online access you can have your mail directed to a virtual address and you can read it digitally. This is much more convenient than getting clients to mail you at whatever hotel you’re at.

Be sensible about where you can work

Just because you can work practically anywhere doesn’t mean that you should. Some places such as the beach may not be practical. If you want to visit the beach, do it in your free time.

Get the work/travel balance right

It’s important that you’re doing enough work so that you’re making enough on an income to live on while you travel. However, you don’t want to spend so much time working than you can’t enjoy the places you’re travelling to. By travelling slowly, you can enjoy more free time in each place. At the same time, don’t get too caught up partying or adventuring to the point that you neglect your work.
